My 92 yota keeps stalling

Hey guys yota newbie here!
I know this has probably been covered a million times and I've searched but no real help. I have a 1992 3.0 v6. Auto. The fuel filter has been replaced and I just removed the cat because it was clogged up. But the truck is still dying when I shift to reverse or drive. It will idle just fine in neutral or park. I was able to get the truck to stay running long enough to run into town (5 miles one way) and back without stalling but soon as it gets to operating temp it stalls slot. Has anybody dealt with this or can point me to where I need to start looking?

This morning I went out and started up the truck. It didn't die when I put it in gear on the cold start. I was able to put it in drive and actually drive down the road and turn around but when I turned around and gas'd on it, it died on me before shifting to the next gear and I coasted it into my driveway but was able to start it back up and put it in reverse an back it up into where I have it parked. Also if I give it a little gas before dropping it into drive or reverse I am able to keep it from dying. Fuel pump? Torque converter?

Start with the easy stuff, like ignition timing (a timing light is $30, and you need one anyway). Check for stored codes (jumper TE1 to E1; steady 2hz flashing means "no codes.")

Okay I'll order one. I'm new to the yota club so the diagnostic port under the hood is very new and confusing to me. When the truck dies the check engine light comes on but it's not on any other times so I don't know how you pull codes.

Toyota really did make the SST referenced in the manual, but anyone on this site just uses a paperclip.
