Mounting 285/75s
I've searched, don't hit me, but I can't find a 100% answer to this question. On my 2nd gen 4runner, I have a set of 3rd gen 16x7 alloys. I'd like to put a set of 285/75R16 tires on them, but am not sure if I am going to encounter a bunch of rubbing on the control arm or not. I know that it SHOULDN'T be an issue with the stock 15" alloys, but I'm not sure how these wheels I have play into matters.
I know I'll have to hammer the pinch weld down, that's no problem.

The site lists the diameter as 33", but I can't see it getting that full diameter, being on a 7" wheel - it's going to be pooched a lot, which is what I want. 285mm = 11.24", so call it an 11" wide tire. It's got 265/75s (Roughly 31x10.50) on it now, and they fit with room to spare.

285's will get pretty close to rubbing on your upper control arm when you flex. Mine only have about .25" between the tire and the UCA, and rub very slightly when I droop the suspension. So, depending on the tire and its "actual" width, it might rub a little.

I was running 285/75's on my 16x7 stockies and if the UCA's on the 2nd gen are the same as on my 3rd, then i can see them fitting. I pounded on my pinch weld, did minor trimming on the inner fender near the pinch weld, and used a 4.5in angle grinder and grinded down a bit minor angles and they fit like a champ. Btw, they were an MT tire, too! Good luck.

I didn't even notice he was going to put them on a 2rd gen...
Backspace on 3rd gen stock alloys is 4.375", so they might stick in too far but I'm not sure. I've got 33x12.50's with I think 4" bs wheels on my 2nd gen, and they fit. So if that helps any, there ya go.

I went ahead and ordered them - looks like I'm in the ballpark, anyway. I take it that it's okay to do a little grinding on the control arms?
I checked the tires that are on there now, I can fit 2 fingers between the sidewall of the tire, and the control arm - call it a solid inch. These tires are less than an inch wider (.78"), so even with .5" more bulge on each side, I should be okay, I think. If not, I've got a grinder and some frustration to take out.

By the way, if anyone's curious as to why I'm fitting big(ger) tires before lift, it's not because I'm planning on mallcrawling with my blingin' new tires - I'm trying to hit this 4runner with a new way of thinking. All the other trucks I have built or built onto have had all kinds of things thrown at them at once - ie, put suspension, tires, and wheels all on at the same time. It's worked okay, but I'm trying to finely tune the 4runner because I want it LOW. This means as little lift as possible to fit and FULLY ARTICULATE the tires of my choice (285/75R16 in this case). I want a low center of gravity, I'm tired of dealing with high top-heavy rigs (like my Ramcharger). I'm going to fit the tires, wheel them, and then decide what kind of lift or suspension items I want to add, if any. After that, it's on to axles and armor, in that order.

if you run into back spacing issues, you could always thow on a little wheel spacer to kick it out a little.

That's what I had kind of figured. I went out last night and measured around the wheel, and the only place I might run into problems with the new diameter of the tire is the rear mud flaps. That's pretty easily solved. There is 1.30" between the upper control arm and the tire, so I don't THINK I will run into a problem there. If so, I'll grab a set of 1" wheel spacers and stick them on the front.

Hey Crawdad, how'd the tires work out? I'm in the same boat as you: 2nd Gen 4Runner, same 3rd Gen wheels, and thinking about 285/75R16s with no lift. What kind of hammering/cutting/grinding did you end up doing? And what kind of tires did you get? Pics would be cool too

The backs fit fine after I took off the rear mudflaps, but rub on the fender lip when the back is loaded down. I've got a set of 2" coil spring spacers going in to fix this. If my rear springs weren't sagging already, I wouldn't need the spacers.
I ended up going with Treadwright D-Muds. I've got about 200 miles on them, and they're great. Moderately noisy for a mud-terrain, and great offroad traction. Can't beat the price of $75/ea, either.

It rubs on the very edge of the UCA, by the ball-joint, I guess when the suspension is cycling. It's not bad, just enough to rub the dirt of the edge of the arm. 15 minutes with a grinder or even a bastard file would make it a non-issue.
It DOES rub near full lock, but I think it's rubbing on the frame, so there ain't much I can do about that. It's right when you hit full steering lock.

This is on a stock Runner, right? I'm looking at getting the same size tires for my 91 PU after BJ spacers and new leafs.
Don't mean to hyjack the thread, but with that minor lift, would there still be any clearance issues?

I can't really say as I don't know if there's any differences between the pickup and the 4runner, but I will say this: if I had a 1" or 2" lift on the 4runner, and non-sagging back springs, I don't think I would have had any issues. There may have been some minor pinch weld issues, but I doubt it.
