so i spent countless days searching here and every other site i could imagine looking for some info on the 3.4 swap and still have a few questions that i need answered. i have a 89 pickup 22re. i picked up a 98 3.4 from a 2 wheel drive auto runner i got all accesories and complete harness including cowl harness. i have tranny,tcase,driveline,crossmember,oil pan, pickup,dip stick and tube, throwout,radiator from a 89 v6 ext cab truck. i need a computer,flywheel, clutch, starter,exhaust. im going with a ors harness, downey headers, and picking up a 3.4 flywheel from the bone yard. i think i got everything covered so here is my questions the computer i need one from a manual trans but does it have to be 4x4 or can i use one from a 2 wheel drive? which starter do i need 3.0 or 3.4 starter? i have one from the 3.4 auto trans but i dont think it will work. i know i need to move motor/crossmember mounts but thats easy. so any help or advice would be great. btw great site

The computers are different for autos and manuals. Try reading these articles.

Yes the computers are different. But you did not say (but I assume) that your pickup is a 4x4. You would be better off getting a computer from the 98 M/T 4x4 (from the same as your engine PU or 4Runner, etc) to be sure you had all the functionality. You can use the 3.4L starter. I have no idea if the AT starter is the same as the MT starter but a simple part number search would tell you that. If you want an easier exhaust install I would use the custom ORS crossover. I used Downey headers on my swap but this was before the crossover was available.
