Minimal spark

Hi
replaced head gasket, 2 days later running excellent quit running 2 minor backfires.
No light at plugs with timing light.
Barely a spark while grounding at wiper bolt.
Replaced coil and high tension resistance at 9.2 where old was 10 and fsm calls for 12 to 16
Cleaned all grounds connections etc.
Resistance at pickup coil 240,fsm says 130 to 190.
Wasent the coil do you think it's the signal generator. Can it send any spark at all if faulty.
hoping not ignighter and going to attempt testing now.
Appreciate help
Been brokebdownnin desert in glamis since wednesday
Thank you

Your spark issue...

If it is the igniter you can get on eBay for $25 complete... Of course Chinese knockoff but they work who cares... I just replaced my blown head gasket a week or so ago... Was running like crap couldn't get to the bottom of it.... Ended up being a timing issue, bad distributor cap and wires.....recheck your timing and make sure your number one is on TDC compression stroke... Very important make sure you have a new wire set... New NGK V power or Denzo U groove plugs only! Prefer the latter! Most importantly make sure you're distributed cap is good, replace it... Your wires and or cap could be disintegrated... Mine was I didn't even realize it really pissed me off... So easy to overlook the obvious and most simple... Good luck let us know how you make out, Frank in VA. New to the forums, been fooling with Toyota's pickups for 30 years. Currently have a 86 extra cab long bed, bought five years ago with a blown head gasket, didn't know... been driving it ever since, was down to two and a half cylinders...putting along....lol.

Thanks Frank in va for your help. This is day 5 stuck in the sand at the dunes in glamis where everyone is buzzing around in 500 hp rails, cannams and 4 wheelers. The guy at the rental place has been very nice and I drug my battery 300 yes on a suitcases dolly to him last night to charge and am going to go get it than check my voltage.
I ordered a pickup coil at autozone and am going to start the 60 mile journey with my thumb out if the battery does not do the trick.
question #1
would I have any spark at all if the pickup coil was bad at the grounded coil high tension
#2
Would I have any spark with bad ignighter.
I had just set my timing a day before but wilm check
My wires are 1 week old along with the plugs.
Thing is it was running perfectly, crusing through the desert flats at 60 65 mph and than quit just like I turned off ignition.
Would a degraded cap or rotor do that?
I'll get an ignighter and sit here and wait for delivery but man am I ready to move.liw on supplies
thank you

Have not checked the the ECU for any thing related as of now and coil in desperation bought a new one even though I was pretty certain that it would not be the problem.
what puzzles me is the high tension resistance is 9.2 on the new.the 2 others I have read 10
The fsm says 12 to 16
Clueless and also pickup coil reads 230 on resistance and fan says 130 to 190

That sounds like the TPS took a dump.
Unplug it and see how it runs just setting... don't drive it that way. If it idles and revs normally it's the TPS

Replied and dont see my thread
It will not start
are you suggesting to remove tps and try to start.
Now with fully charged battery I have blue small spark at coil high tension lead and 11 volts both at primary and secondary circuits.
I am just waiting on suggestions before I thumb it into town for my coil pickup.
Wits end

Well, I thought it was still able to start but just running really crappy..
you don't have to remove it, just unplug it.
you might give that a shot anyhow?
I had a similar experience... just driving along and wham, like you shut the fuel off... it wouldn't rev over 2k rpm and would just bounce around at idle...
Not sure what other symptoms a completely failed TPS might be.

I in utter frustration was digging around my boxes on the rv looking for a spare used distributor cap .I dont throw away spare parts but dont have one.found a rotor and I was taking off cap to blow potential sand out I threw the rotor on.with no hopes,my mind actually saying in a disgusting manor, this ain't gonna do it,i reach in the window and turn the key and without a full revolution it fired up.problem solved .5 days which all started on a dark desert highway,no cool wind in my hair,
if I had been a better diagnoser in 5 minutes I could a been outta there
thanks for everyone's help
Sincerely and merrily on my way
Happy me

Could have had some moisture in your distributor

When you open up the cap it could have dried out

Make sure you get a new cap and rotor

There's a seal underneath the distributor cap too...that thing is supposed to be are tight so no moisture can get in can't have any hairline cracks either.

Glad you got it going

Frank in VA.
