Maybe a belt squeal?

can i just remove those dust shields? or can i grease them or the washers that sit inside them?
there's an odd continuous scrapping(not very loud) sound when i run the truck now - it wasn't there before i cleaned everything so maybe i degreased something that needs a new coat of grease
or is it possible to overtighent the idler pulley?

Give a little grease a try. Might also spin he pulley w/o the belt on and see if you can isolate the noise more. Might be the order of the washers/shields is off or a shield is on backwards or something.
Unless you went crazy on tightening the center bolt, usually won't over tighten it. To do so you would need to deform the center race of the bearing.

ah no more squeal
found it and fixed it - alternator belt...typical
thanks for the assistance
i did end up trashing one of the bent up dust guards on the idler pulley that was also making a bunch of racket - should i seek a replacement?
