I was going to say something about that too since my 265/75r16's are over 31" tall... but decided against it.

I will attest to this statement. I'm on my second used tranny, and there was a new tranny in my Runner when I bought it. 2 trannys I beat the ever livin crap out of, but the first tranny my wife just drove daily to work - about 14km for 14-16 days per month with 32x11.5 at's. After that I installed an afterrmarket tranny cooler - second largest you can get inline with the factory. I will tell yo 4.10's and 33x12.5's is hard on the tranny - I wish I could have used the tranny money for gears. I would have gone 5.71's just to have the extra umph.....

do you have a temp gauge on the trans? How do you know you didn't? If you don't know how hot the transmission is getting over periods of time, then you really can't judge if you need one. Once the transmission gets hot, it takes a while, without stopping, for it to cool. When we installed the trans temp gauge on my dad's f-250, we put the probe before any cooling took place, so that the gauge read the true temperature of the tranny fluid coming out of the the transmission before the coolers. REason for this: if your transmission is 250+ degrees (too hot anyway) after the cooler has taken off 50 degrees, the transmission is really running at 300 degrees, which will kill tranny fluid and clutches very quickly. I think any automatic transmission vehicle that you either, go over the pass with, tow with, wheel, modify, etc., at minimum needs a tranny temp gauge, if not an auxiliary cooler.

The automatics have a really high 4 gear, as you probably know, it shifts a lot between 4th and 3rd because the engine doesn't have enough power to hold it in 4th. You need to get at least 5.29's for your 31" tires for good power and 5.71's for anything higher.
