Manual transmission making “ice maker” noise.
Hello All,
I’m brand new to YotaTech so please excuse me if this is in the wrong forum.
I just picked up an 86 4Runner. 22RE, manual transmission, twin marlin cases.
It all of a sudden started making an ice maker/rattling sound coming from the transmission right below the shifter. First of all it would only make it in 4wd so I shifted it into 2wd. After 15 minutes of driving it made the same noise in 2wd. It makes this noise in all gears, with or without the clutch pedal pushed in. The most noticeable is when I’m coasting in neutral and the sound gets quieter as I slow down to a stop. It doesn’t make the noise when I’m stopped, with or without the clutch pedal pushed in. It also doesn’t make the sound when the t-case is in neutral.
I drained the transmission fluid and it was pretty brown and the magnetic filler had some shavings on it. Nothing major. I changed the fluid and the sound went away for about 100km. Now the same sound is back.
Any ideas guys???
Thanks,
Scott

Bearings will always be the odds on favorite for likely failures on that unit. If you could run the vehicle on a lift and get under it while all the wheels are turning(2wd and 4wd) you most likely could narrow done the area of focus. Please don't try this with raising the rear tires with only a floor jack. The countershaft bearings in the trans have always ben the most common failures(trans is noisy in all gears but 4th), but after so many years any bearing could need help.
Last year I got bored and decided to replace the bearings in the transfer case. I was surprised to find that the bearing for the idler gear was starting to fail.
Marlin Crawler has good kits with Japanese bearings at very fair prices.
