manual steering swap
Hey guys, I'm new here, so try to be nice. I don't know a lot about toyotas yet, but I'm learning. I want to know if any one can help me, I want to do a manual steering swap on my 89 sr5 4x4. I want to get rid of the power steering and do a manual set up. So any info on what it will take to do it would be great, like parts, difficulty and so on, thanks so much.

If I just take off the belt and plug the lines, won't it be harder to turn than just regular manual steering. The issue on my truck is, the steering box is leaking and its making my drive way a mess. And the cheapest steering box I found was a used one at a pick a part yard for like $385. I thought I might beable to save a few bucks by swapping it to a manual set up.

Marlin crawler has a rebuilt one on his website for cheaper than that. Its going to be a lot harder to steer, if you want a glimpse, put your key in the on position, without the engine running and try to turn the steering wheel, thats what its going to be like more or less.
It will be easier when the tires are turning, but not a lot easier. Unless you have some huge arm muscles you arent going to like it!

Does anyone know how disalike are the manual gearboxes and power gearboxes are from one another? I mean, are the gears the only difference?
I wander if you could rebuild your power gearbox and put in the gears from the manual gearbox to keep the power assist, but have a quicker ratio?
just a thought, I dunno
