Well that's going to be a hard question to answer. Do you still intend on doing mild wheeling? What kind? Snow/rock/mud/sand? Do you have a family to take with you? Are you planning on staying with Toyota?
The list is endless.
In my case I bought an 89 4runner that I'll be working on to get it DD/trail worthy so I can take my boy (85lb Shepard mix) and the wife (not a Shepard mix) along on camping and wheeling days and still have enough room in the back for the gear and goodies. The 86 pickup I drive now is great for wheeling but doesn't have the room in the cab that I want. This may be an option for you as well.

Check in here: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f159/
This will contain any/all info you could ever want on engine swaps.
If you are looking at getting a different vehicle, i am not sure what your question therein would be.

Something to consider is the implications of the phrase "daily driver". Not sure about the specific laws of NY regarding that so it would be the first thing I'd check into- the requirements and standards applied to swapping an engine.
California takes a stance which relatively easily allows an engine change IF the engine was offered in your particular make and model and all the emissions equipment for the new engine are installed and fully operational. So, that'd mean you'd have few issues going to a 3VZE. Beyond that, other options would be possible but then you are constrained by a few basic things: engine should be out of a vehicle same year or newer than the one it's being installed in, all the relevant emissions equipment pertaining to the engine being installed must be installed and it must meet the emissions standards of whichever is newer or more strict- the vehicle chassis or the engine.
I've done some searching into swaps and emissions requirements, etc. and have seen some NY state web pages that quote various California requirements as relevant to NY so... start with checking in to your state's requirements and what they allow.
Beyond that... DeathCougar has provided you a link to quite a bit of information.
