Locker Confusion
ok so im looking for lockers and i found some "lock right" lockers on marlin Crawler at http://www.marlincrawler.com/htm/diff/pickup_diff.htm i was looking at the 4.88 lockright for 760...
now my question is if i change the gears i obviously need to change them in both axles but marlin crawler doesnt seperate fronts from rears...
so im wondering how i can find out what locker size i need for my front and such or if my diffs are the same and i just need to purcase 2 Lockrights which puts me to $1520 plus tax, ship etc...
how can i find out what exactly i need on my truck? 89 p/u 22RE w/31's changing to 33's after lockers/body lift

the link you reference is for a brand new differential with 4.88 gears and a lock-rite already installed in it, sent straight to your door.
your front differential is a different unit and is not offered on the marlin crawler website.
if you want to buy the one off the website, it will only work in the rear end. search around for IFS 7.5" lock-rite if you want one for the front. front diffs with 4.88s in them are pretty common here and on other boards so keep your eyes open if you want one with 4.88s already

yes, you can put them in if you know what you are doing. gears are a very precise part of you truck and it is advised that you get them set-up right the first time if you dont know exactly what youre doing.

Are you taking into account a master rebuild kit as well? That is another $140. Best I could find was $246 locker, $189 brand name gears, $140 master install kit, and expect $150-$250 labor. Total $725-$825. I know there are quite a few members up in the NW that can probably refer you to a good set up shop. Also, if you have manual hubs up front you might get by with a mini install kit as your bearings have probably not seen too much wear and tear. Just some points to ponder. You might do well to lurk around and look for a diff already set up with 4.88's. A simple lockright install without gear change would be considerably less expensive.

Differential setup requires special tools and technique and I think there has been about zero people in the world get it right the first time with no help or instruction. You can buy the parts online and look for a local installer, but a lot of them won't put in parts you didn't buy from them.
I suggest you either find a used unit that's a;ready setup or try to get ahold of Zuk and get him to do it. He's about the best.

Btw, you can probably do the lockright yourself if you find a 3rd with the right gears, it's the 3rd setup with the new gears that's the problem...

Actually the V6 lockright is cheaper because its missing 2 major parts compared to the others. The V6 uses the existing Toyota outer side gears. The other lockrights give you inner and outer drive flanges (better IMHO) eliminating the stock Toyota side gears.

General rule of thumb here, if you have to ask the answer is no. You can't do it yourself.

It is not easy, and it takes A LOT of patience, and, as mentioned, specialty tools. I 100% agree with "if you have to ask, then no".

if you do a lockright, you can do it. get the rear done, wheel it, then if you want to do a front locker and gears, you can drop the third and take it in to save some cash, and if you are real competent you can drop the front diff and take them in at the same time to get gears. and they can do the front locker at the same time. most don't need a front locker, but gears are different.
doing as much on your own will save $$, taking the diff's in around here will save around $400 in labor.

but if i change the gears in back shouldnt i also change the gears in the front? because if my rears are turning slower than my fronts wont stuff break? or atleast have a lot of strain on it?

ok so i found a site that sells the IFS diff with 4.88's for $635...
should i just go with that and then add the locker later if i feel like i need it? or should i try to get the front locked up at the same time as the rear... and it's pretty simple when just adding a locker correct?
edit: heres the site i was looking at http://www.jawsgear.com/store/catalo...p?cPath=33_369
