Sounds like it is misfiring. Something like you describe is likely to be secondary ignition component related (plugs, wires, cap, rotor, or less likely coil)

Just for proper forum etiquette, the fix (even though it was a while ago) was replacing the cables and plugs. The fan clutch was extremely loose as well, no idea if that played a part. Thanx for all the input!

Glad you updated this, I've noticed the exact same thing happening to mine over the last few days and wasn't sure where to start checking.
