just an new guy
Hey there...
Been lurking a while, so I thought I'd say hi. Picked up an 88 4runner a week or so ago as a project. This is my second 1st gen 4runner, but the 1st I'll actually be redoing. The first one was just a driver.
This one was actually a California car originally before disappearing in to Baja for a few years. Although it runs, the engine/wiring is now a mess and will need redoing. first step....get it to run right and pass smog
A preemptive thanks for all the help.

've always had a soft spot for 'em.
Ya know, I never thought it'd be so difficult to find a smog/vaccuum diagram for an 88 though. I have one for a 3.0 for a 93 and hopefully it's the same. Man, everything I see for an 88 is for a 22re. even my 88 FSM pdf doesn't show the 3vze...argh! LOL.

Hmm...10mpg, vsv disconnected, frozen fan clutch and no thermostat. No wonder it runs like crap and gives me a headache when I'm in the cab. Lol....replacing lots of stuff in the am.

Actually the FSM's were requested to be taken down by Toyota so the only way to get them is the "Wayback Machine"...

Thanks for the link
Yep, probably should have followed the instructions on filling the cooling system. There was no thermostat in it and after I put it in, she overheated. Pretty sure I didn't have nearly any water in the system. On the plus side I got the plugs changed, new fan clutch in and it still runs like crap! Lol
