88 22re. Ive been battling this starting issue for a couple weeks. It started with intermittent no start, just a single click, but if i kept turning the key over and over, it would sometimes kick in the starter and fire up. After a few days of that, it would never start. I figured the starter was bad. I changed that out with a reman from oreilly's and it was perfect for about a week, then started having intermittent issues again. Same single click. This time i changed out the starter relay. I just installed a universal one and wired up with the plug from the original. Still intermittent until today, now it wont start anymore.

I'm not sure if I just got a bad starter, or if there is something else I need to look at. Is there anything else I can test or look at before going through the hassle of pulling that starter again?

 

I have yet to have a starter to fail. Usually just replace the plunger and contacts in one and good to go. This thread is quite similar to your issue https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...-issue-292284/ Clean the starter relay contacts, replace plunger and contacts in the starter and look into RADs starter fix. I dont care for part store parts and usually have issues with them. Plenty of threads on parts stores. It is not just Orielly but the other big names as well. Look for OEM parts online and usually you can find them.

 

First, you need to tell us exactly what and where clicks because we could not hear nor feel it from where we are.

You replaced the starter and the relay that you thought were bad but you you still did not fix the wiring of the starter relay that we are absolutely sure is wrong, like I described in my post.

Before you spend hours and possibly close to a hundred dollars fixing something you think is broken, spend half an hour and a few dollars fixing something that the electrically-savvy are already sure is broken.

Can you elaborate a bit on what you're demonstrating on in that picture? Why does this modification need to be done? I'd just like to have a better understanding of what this is doing before I start cutting into my harness.

Also, at the bottom of the image, it says to insulate that wire. By that you mean it's just going to be unused, so cover it up the chopped end?
