Another contributing factor is the color of the vehicle. When I was 16 I had a little fun looking at insurance costs on Progressive, first of all, being 16, male, unmarried, having a RED (on average i think $50 more to insure a red vehicle) truck that was older with no real safety features besides seat belts and the drivers-side "bar" was like $1900 for 6 MONTHS. Right now I'm 19, I'm still on my moms policy, but I pay for it myself, its about 900 for six months. when I was 16-17-18, it was close to $1400 for six months, but my mom still payed it for me. This is through Geico. If I were to start my own policy, it would be around $1300 for six months right now. I also got $200 off for six months for good grades in high school. I wouldn't doubt it if my '88 4runner is more to insure, being older, and a 2door vehicle with back seats, yet the insurance might see it as not a complete loss if it is totaled since, to them, its worth nigh even $1K probably. I'll just have to see...

thats the truth. my last accident a drunk driver hit me and i flipped on my side in a ditch. i had to literally turn the truck off. the back tire that was off the ground was just spinning and the truck was still running.

... Oh, the memories.
And that's also why the SVO Mustang disappeared- it was just as fast as, and handled much better than the 5.0 LX and GT's.... and the Probe didn't catch on- FWD / AWD made by Mazda... hmm... the 'meri-peeps wanted muscle car, not tech.
But I digress yet again.

I feel your pain. I had a 79 Mustang Cobra 2.3L Turbo 4cyl back in '87. It cost almost 75% more for insurance than the 79 V8's back in 87. Maybe it had something to do with the fact it was only rated 8 hp lower than the 5.0 and a couple hundred pounds ligher (where it counted on the 'stangs: up front)... nunno. Tell ya this: I drove an 82 5.0 and that thing would understeer / plow straight ahead if you were on the throttle... and my 79 would plow if you were on the pedal and entered a corner too fast, but just a tap on the brakes and feather the throttle and you could carve grooves into rails... but the 82 would understeer with the brakes and then oversteer when the throttle opened up.
... Oh, the memories.

But I digress yet again.

400 hp was little more than a cam and turbo mod away for the 2.3L. dollar for dollar the turbo 2.3 was easier to mod.
google up sierra cosworth RS (body-wise the similar to and the inspiration for the Merkur XR4-TI and Scorpio of the 80's/early 90's... and provided the inspiration for and functional theory of the 'dual' rear spoiler on the SVO Mustang).
