idle drops and dies when put in gear while cold
Im not sure whats up with my yota but its something. I have the 3vxze in my 904runner. WHen i start it up in the morning (yes very cold here in washington) it idles high but about 1500 not more, then i put it in gear and it pretty much drops the idle to zero then pops back up to 1100 and i can leave, sometimes it just dies but most the time its back up after a split second chug. THen when i gas it to take off from a stop light, its snowing so i gas it very gently and it just chugs out and idle drops for a second and then she kicks forward and takes off. Now if im on a freeway or something and i just hit the gas fast you can hear it chug out and idle also drop.
Back ground info. some electrical tape slipped off the cone filter for air intake and sucked into intake. I didnt at first catch that the throttle was stuck open at the throttle body so i adjusted the idle sense i was sitting at 3000rpms constantly. But i finaly figured out what happend and removed throttle body cleaned it and she worked. Now i figured i just left the idle to low so i keep adjusting it one full turn a day out and have been doing this for several days but its not really improved much.
WHen my truck is warmed up and ran for 30 minutes in this cold she is completly fine, idle is around high 500-700 in gear and around 1100 in park. I hear you should be between 800-1200 when warm but is that in gear or in park?
also when i am sitting in park i had my buddy press the gas, when she chugs for that first second and then kicks in and revs up a puff of dark smoke comes and and my truck doesnt smoke normaly.
Should i keep up the adjusting of idle and get it to a higher setting or am i ok and something else is wrong? Fuel filter is new, plugs and wires are new, o2 sensor is new. im wondering if its fuel pump of injectors or mixture issue.

it may sound un related but i would check your compression, i had a burnt exhaust valve on my late 3vz that created those same symptoms, i wish i had done a compression check first because i spent over $200 on new parts witch none of them fixed my low idle ,and stalling at a red lights while in gear(auto). if your compression is up to par i would check the basics, air, fule ,spark, Vacuum,( there over 5 miles of vacuum line on that motor it only takes one split to let un metered air) a miss can create a low idle and kill your gas milage.
