Identifying Unknown Camshaft in 22r engine
Hello all,
Not too long ago I picked up an 87 Toyota pickup, I'm currently tuning it up and getting it road ready. It's clear that someone has gone hunting for power in this thing, it has pace setter long tube headers, offenhauser intake, weber 38 carb, LCE Spiral spacer block, MSD digital 6a ignition system, and been converted to electric cooling fan. I went through and adjusted the valve lash and ignition timing to the factory specs. I'm now wondering if it has an RV cam in it, because if you've done all the other power mods, why wouldn't you right? So I'm unsure what to set the valve lash to, as I know it's different on RV cams. But when I adjusted the valve lash it was all over the place so it wasnt set right to begin with. My question is, would it be bad to try to adjust the valve lash to some random RV cam specs and see if I notice any improvement in performance? Is there a way to Identify Cam shafts? I dont know if rv cams have different ignition timing specs either, I'm just trying to make this thing run its best. Any advice appreciated. Thank you.

I bet you are right that it has a bit of a cam in it, and its a decent guess that the cam came from LCE. I would call their tech line and see if there is a good middle of the road number that will work ok and keep you from tearing anything up with too tight of a setting.
