I replaced the stock speakers with better aftermarket units soon after I bought my 4Runner new in 1991. It's not that hard to take the bits off to get to the speaker enclosures but it requires removing the lower dash panel on the drivers side and the glove box on the passenger side. My advice is just take your time, be sure to bag and tag screws as you remove them (and make some notes about where they came from).

Good luck!

If its not the speaker, it's It's either in the wiring or the 30 year old cassette radio. My guess would be the radio.
