well lets see here....
my motor is rebuilt..and i was told not to "lug" the motor AT ALL.
so i haven't been i take it to 5000 everyday i drive it.
whenever i get around 5000miles on it i'll be a lil easier on it.
i have 33x12.50's and 4.56's....i believe, the rear axle has some markings on it with a pen...so i'm not sure yet....at 65mph i'm at 3000RPM(5th gear)...that's 65mph by the speedo. not sure of the ACTUAL speed...but at around 3250 i'm at 70mph.again by the speedo.
mine really wakes up past about 3000rpms...5th gear wakes up past 3250, and i can actually hold speed up some decent hills..and if i can't hold 70mph in 5th, i can FOR SURE hold it in 4th...and my 3rd gear is a beast..it even surprised my buddy in his 400hp Hemi 1/2ton dodge 4x4 (On 35x12.50R20's..stock gears.) i mean, i was no match for the Hemi, but i caught him off guard for sure.
here pretty soon i'm gonna get my 285/75R16 Toyo M/T's mounted...they are about the same height as my BFG's, but a little narrower, but they're Heavier (Load Range E's..10ply) and my BFG's are Load Range C's.
after that, i'm replacing CV's, Ball Joints, along with replacing the ADD tube with a Non-ADD tube, and some Manual Hubs.
i think with this combo i'll have a little better power and a little better MPG's
oh jeez that was a long post...

Cruising town with my manual, 3k is about where I shift.
When I'm "trying to make it home in time to watch Cops, Officer" I shift around 4-4.5k
Hauling uphill, I've seen in the neighborhood of 5.5k in 3rd... Usually when this happens, it's because I will NOT be passed by a guy in a shiny new Tacoma with a 3.4... Suck my exhaust, rich boy.

Anyone else with a 5spd notice that the 3VZE really hesitates until it gets to like 26-2700 and then kicks in hard. I notice it in 1st gear the most. Trying to punch it from a light and it's a dog and then just before you are gonna shift at 3K, it kicks in. Lot of weird qualities to this engine.
Mine runs like crap when it's cold.

yeah mine pulls like a bat out of hell above 3000, as long as the temps are staying consistent. if it gets too cold it starts not running right, so keeping it up to temp is important in the cold weather. with my street a/t's i too can break them loose but it is tricky with 4runner since is pretty top heavy. another reason the engine is relatively sluggish in the low revs is because that is when the egr opens (2000-2700ish). Mine was actually sticking shut and it ran better but not all of the time. the computer compensates for the egr open by changing the timing which made mine ping. I got mine working right and it pulls better than ever in the low revs and as long as it let's go at the right time, it pulls hard to 5000 in 1st and 2nd but in 3rd and 4th i wrap it out to around 4000 or 4200 depending on how it running that day.

i hit the rev limiter all the time motor runs strong never had any problems with it. from my experience it'll never last if you baby it, gotta runner for what shes worth, keep her cleaned out.

I usually shifted around 3000-3500 unless I was pulling out on the highway and trying to get up to speed in which case I shifted around 3500-4000 cruising at about 70 I was usually about 2700 with 33's and 4:30's my mom's identical 4runner with an automatic shifts fairly high I believe around 6000....im not positive though

3.0l 5 speed usually shift lower gears below 3000RPM but from 3rd gear up when accelarating 3.5 to 4k, have taken it over 4k. Power starts at just above 3k and ends at about 5.5k.

I NEVER shift below 4000 ever. If im getting on the freeway I take it to 5000 and if Im pulling a hill I leave it in 3rd around 4500-5000. And when snow wheeling it sees extended periods of 5000+ for a long time

Usuaaly about 3000-4000. If I need to get up to speed quicker or get up a steep hill, I'll push her to 5,000. Most ever was about 6,000 when the throttle stuck wide open. Sadly, I didn't even notice until I pushed the clutch in to shift. Sooo much power
