If you pull the fan (4 bolts) you can pass it into the shroud and along the front of the motor and up the other side by the Throttle body.

I replaced mine a couple of months ago. I did not remove the radiator hose, I took off the airbox and was able to work it out from the top side. I also have AC and power steering, it took some doing to get it out but it worked.

Good luck!

Thanks, but i did it before i read that i could just remove the fan shroud ... I removed the lower rad hose and drained the radiator, totally sucked becuase i got covered in anti freeze and was very cold. Also i just finnished with a VERY long over heating problem caused by air in my system, i have flushed the coolant system like 10 times in the last month. On the up side it fits out nicely with the hose gone, plus it was easer to install the new one with all the extra space you have. Now i just have to figure out why my 22re seems to not have enough power to turn the new alternator at an idle, but that is for another thread, Thanks all.

Eeeuuwww! I know that hellish wet/cold feeling. I was hoping you could avoid doing it that way. But, now it's done. Yay!

On to the next thread!!! Ho!

I don't see why you have to take anything off. Or use a pry bar for anything.

Taking the alternator off a 22RE should involve removing 2 bolts, and taking the power and ground cables off. I don't understand why there's such a problem with this. Is there something different about my motor or what?

Hmmmm....I don't know. I didn't use a pry bar, just had to move the rad shroud a bit. I bought a ND alternator. Would brand make a difference with size or shape, etc?

fsm says to use a pry bar when installing the new alternator. Pry bar pulls the alternator back to tighten the belts. I don't know how some of you got it out without removeing the lower rad hose , maybe my after market radator is bigger than the stock, but there was barily enough room without the hose i had to yank, twist push and screem to get that thing out of the opening.

I have a 89 with P/S and A/C, it looked MUCH more difficult to attempt to pull it out the top, so I just removed the lower rad hose and saved all coolant in some empty water jugs (just replaced my rad 3 days before!) so I could re-use it after I hooked the rad hose back up, that was all pretty straight forward like everyone has said....but...

Had a minor issue with installing the new alt, bought it from autozone (lifetime warranty even when caked with mud) and it came with no new bolts, after getting the new one in place, the top bolt that came out of the old alt had different threading than the new one! Luckily one of my friends had dropped by, took me back the autozone picked up some bolts long enough to pass through the top hole and a bolt to fit so I actually could torque it down.

Parking brake light and charging light on dash both went off, job done
