Hi-Flo Cat
I'm considering a set of LCE headers and perhaps putting 2.25 in pipes (I think I recall 2.5 in being too large for the 22re). Question is, if I don't have a hi-flo cat (got stock), will that prevent any (or much) power gains?

Well if you keep your stock cat you wont be able to upgrade pipe size ( very cleanly that is). Since the cat is so old, you might aswell upgrade anyways, aftermarkets like magnaflow are only around 80 bucks. You can get upwards of 100 for your stock toyota cat at a recyclers.

Ahh, thanks Jay--that makes sense. I know LCE sells cats but they're quite a bit more. Maybe I'll go with Magna.
Yeah, it's definitely time to replace the 02 senser. I've tried all the tricks and can't get the nuts off of it, so I think I'll have to cut the pipe. Thought I might as well replace some other stuff while I'm down there.

Just put on a magnaflow high flow spun cat and Thorley headers on today and kept the stock muffler. It's stealth quiet and I definitely feel a performance gain. $107 for the Cat from Jegs shipped. 2.25" pipe.

On my truck I tried to remove the nuts, but the studs came right out. I torched them til they were cherry and removed the nuts from the studs w/ the help of a vice/vicegrips. I then welded the studs to the pipe. Doesn't even leak.

Hmmm... That gives me some hope.
The nuts are melted onto the studs, they just look like a rounded gob of crap.
I guess I would need new studs and nuts then.
Anyone know what size the stud/nuts are?
*sorry for the thread jack*

It would be very helpful if someone were to help me out with the stock 22re exhaust diameter. Most of me exhaust system is new but the cat is blocked. Can't afford a larger diameter exhaust, so I am just replacing the blocked cat and I need the in/ out diameter.

I would just buy everything from LCE as an exhaust package to make things simple. Get their headers, cat, & exhaust system which is 2 1/4" mandrel bent. Then you'll know it should all work together fine, and your entire exhaust will be of the same quality and you'll get the best performance possible out of it.

I'm out of town for a while and I thought I'd price one out while I'm away. I think I'll go for a Magnaflo cat, its just a matter of getting it the right size then, busting the old on off as its seriously rusted into place. The faces on the nuts that hold it to the exhaust pipe on the downstream end are no longer distinguishable. Torch and grinder time.

Good advice for replacing the cat, I'll have to keep that in mind as mine is crushed.
This however, needs addressing. It may restrict what miniscule power gains you will see.
To be clear- EXHAUST DOES NOTHING ON A N-A MOTOR!!!!!!!!!!!
You have a gutless toyota truck. Strapping on an exhaust will NOT make it a race car. You will go from like 100 hp to 105 hp. Wow. I did it all, CAI, ceramic coated headers, hi flow 2.25 exhaust, muffler, blah blah. zip. zero. nada.
You want bolt on power? Buy a supercharger.
Exhaust will make it sound cool, it won't do dick for making the truck go faster.
Buy it if you must, but I'd put that money into a new cam/rockers/injectors. Or lockers. Or tires. Or just about anything but exhaust.

These engines simply don't move much air. Hell a gnat farts more air than these engines exhaust.
Regarding a hi-flo cat. Modem cats don't really cause any restrictions worth worrying about in anything that you'll likely to put into the vehicle.
