help with surging idle 22re
#21
I think we need a sticky writeup on the proper steps for idle surging. #1 should be checking TPS, #2 should be checking gaskets, #3 should be checking gaskets again, #4 should be checking the throttle body and throttle screw, #5 could be rechecking the gaskets, #6 could be checking the butterfly valve on the throttle body and #7 should be checking the IACV.

Hello everyone. Im new here and fairly new to Toyota. Im here seeking wisedom. My ride is a regular cab 22re. Idle surges when brakes are applied. Replaced booster which did not fix the problem. The great and powerful google sent me here. I have looked at this entire thread. I did the tape test for iacv. No help. Took out and cleaned idle screw and adjusted to approximately 900 rpm. Problem solved (temporarily). After the engine cooled; I started it again and the engine will barely idle 200 250 rpm. Adjusted screw again back to 900 (cold) As the engine warmed up again; idle climbed again to approximately 1300. Surging with brake again. Is this a tps problem??
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

as far as my experience goes with a 91 p/u with a 22re engine goes, I found basically 3 parts that could impact the idle besides the set screws. they are the mass air sensor, the throttle position sensor, and, of course, the computer. if i were you I'd start with the cheapest part:that is, the tps. mas also over time will degrade too . the used ones from carbone tend to test out of spec but i did over time once receive one thru auto zone which was calibrated at the factory by an tech that I spoke with. you might just try to clean the area with a special cleaner available at walmart, etc. the computer can b gotten from salvage but its solid state and I doubt is the culprit. but you never know until you change it out if need b.
hope this helps.
good luck.
