Help finding resource about hours to rebuild engine
I may be off base, but it seems that the mech that I've been using for little things, maybe getting ready to lower the boom on me.
Is there a website I can go to, to see how many hours he should bill me to remove, and rebuild lower end (farm out boreing) and then put back in trk. He has mentioned looking up how much to charge me in a shop hourly guide but he wouldn't give me a estimate.
Just want to be armed with something if he lays a bill on me for say 1500$

Surely some one can direct me to a site? Theres a shop guide that mechanics look at to bill out work but I can't find anything that you can get to without paying a membership fee!!

you can try Alldata.com..but you have to subscribe... I just looked up how many hours to do a complete rebuild...with PS and A/C..34-35 hrs...$1500 wouldn't be unreasonable based on those hrs for just the bottom end....

OK how bout an opinion ?....
Pull 22re engine, replace clutch, how long should that take for an experienced mechanic
Disassemble engine then reassenble after bored and crank turned...
He charges 38$ an hour labor so I'm guessing "6" hours out and back in.
Another mechanic is building engine he said "around 400$"
So around 750$ for labor ya think????

OK THX so I should expect say 600$ or so just to pull and put back . Then the 400$ to build sooo 1000$. The mechine shop is boring and acidwash with crank turn 250$ = 1250$ plus misc. parts I'll try not to grimmis too much and hope I go another 165K X fingers I'll post after I drive off lot

lets say $75/hr for labour: you estimate $400 to build, that gives just over 5hrs. Any mechanic who tells you they can completely build your engine in 5hrs, I would be very skeptical of.
$250 is a pretty good deal to get the block machined and crank turned, but not impossible to find. However, what about the head? It cost me $325(cdn, so $275) to get my head "tuned up", ie pull the valves, check the seats hot tank and surface all the surfaces.
Then what about parts? You're going to need bearings and rings at a minimum, which is another $100(or more). But you'll have to get your pistons and rods cleaned up, which takes more time and money. If you're replacing stuff, the $$ keeps rolling in. Gaskets to. You can't reuse your HG, and that will set you back another at least $30(more if the mechanic supplies it, or if its a Toyota gasket)
If you're having the entire engine rebuilt, getting a $1500+ bill shouldn't be a huge shock. There is a lot of work involved.

a reman engine can be had for $1200. installed for another 1000. thats what my 4runner's PO paid last year anyhow. i would say you probably have a good deal lined up if ur mechanic is good. $38 is cheap for shop time. my local yota gurus charge 95.

Bill^ I was stupid and didn't do lower end when I put new head on so nothing to be done up top. I got my parts LC Eng. Pro street pistons gasket set bearing injectors etc. that was 400$ +
It's funny but at 65$ or 75$ an hour I just wouldn't let him do the work. But by having a reasonable price he gets more work...
