Check list...Hmmmm find what wrong and fix it.

I'm going to start my checking the connections to the AFM, TPS, coil, and dizzy. Then pull the cap and see how it looks. Clean everything in there with a light emery cloth. Toss it back together and go cut wood.

Quick update...

Cleaned out the dist. took emery cloth to the star and pickup. Just enough to say I did. Started much quicker and idled a bit better. Issue still there though.

Next. I did have 3 vac lines not right according to the pics from above. Moved them around and the issue is not as bad nor as often. So I'm going to have to go by the book now and make sure I don't have any other lines misplaced.

Going to have to reset the timing again since the vac change. Still getting 20+ mpg compared to the 17 before I replaced the head. This is with hauling wood also.

I'll update as soon as I have time...Also found my leak...I've been smelling coolant every once in a while. The stat has a small leak. On my list of things to do.

Ok bud....

got some pics....hopefully what you need.

i do remember XXXTREME clicking on the AUTO ZONE website, i believe, for vac-lines and a diagram of them.

i can take as many pics as you need so just tell me if you need a different angle. it is tough to tell from a pic what line goes where....so if you want a FARTHER view that you can zoom in on, let me know.

Alrighty thanks guys!!!! I had found a vac line without a home. i think I have it or not. The 3 lines coming from the back of the motor to the FPR, the Charcoal canister, and the EGR. I need to get those 3 placed right and I think I'll be good.

I like the 22RE, my 4Runner has the 3.0 and I'm not real happy with it. Someday it'll be out or I'll just get another. Can't have too many yotas.

Red face

Ok, Gots a question for you? Would a rad cap of 18lbs cause the thermostat not to open when it should? I replaced the rad a while back and just realized that it's not a Toyota rad when I went to replace the cap.

The Toyota rad cap is at 13lbs the one I have is 18lbs, so would it cause the thermostat not to function proper?

I tried all they had was an 18lb...

Thermostat is new, just picked it up before Christmas. What happens is this...In the AM she'll warm up to about the red line (this is why I replaced the stat) then drop to normal operating temp. Does this everyday. In the morning I have a bit of a miss from start to getting hot, then at normal temp the miss is gone. After work I don't have a miss but it still goes up to almost red then down to normal temp and stays there.

I have burped the system...maybe I'll have to do it again and again and again.

Sounds computer/sensor related to me. I mean, in open loop, warming up, it's hiccuping, ....then suddenly, upon warm up, when ALL sensors have kicked in(including coolant temperature related sensors), it calms down and purrs?(Seems like everything's running off the puter until oper. temp, right? ...But, the High temp thing is strange though.) ORRRRRRR, ......Maybe a TB coolant passage, which closes off after warm up, is plugged to all get up, even before it reaches operating temp?? Sorry, just rambling, .....forgive me, lol.

How IS YOU, Holmes Slice? lol

PS> That "nearing the redline with regularity"........... Seems a bit DANGEROUS to me, especially with a new HG and other goodies, right? Dang, sorry for the Mysterious Heat-up Syndrome, Lumpster.... I'm watching and thinking and, well, ....for now, I'll just root you on! lol. If I think of anything, I promise I'll add it.

A sensor thing maybe...but remember I just had this thing apart and scrubbed out in June. I'm also running a new head the Street R/V.

The hiccups are only in the AM...not in the evenings??? I don't get it. I ran out at 2:00 this afternoon the truck sat since 8:30 this morning and it was fine, except for the heat up to almost red then down to the norm. Maybe I have something wired wrong or a hose not connected correctly?

That's why I changed the stat...I don't like it either. But it does it once at a cold startup then it's fine. Even towing a loaded trailer up back roads she never got hot just stayed right where it should.

as far as the heat up then cool down you need to either buy the Toyota dual stage thermostat or drill a small hole in yours. 4crawler did a write up on it. I assume you have been running your heater.

You know what Lumpy, I didn't have that issue with mine till I rebuilt the motor either. I thought I had a bad new t-stat when mine was doing that, drilling the hole in mine it hasn't done it since. I cannot speak as to how it affect the heater temp and mine sucks right now (although it does work) because the heater control valve in mine is bypassed so it doesn't get that shot of warmer coolant as the t-stat opens and shuts.

EDIT: while I am thinking about it, my gauge spikes as well on a cold cold start but that is only a few seconds into starting and goes right back to bottom out. I highly doubt coolant temp spikes that fast enough to jump the gauge like that. I have a brand new sender in it since rebuild as well so I know it's not my sensor. Wire has been double checked as well. On a warm start or even after an hour or so after initial start it does not do it.

Ya I run the hell out of the heater...Now this is even a bit weirder. Over the summer this didn't happen when I was not running the heat. Last winter it would run much warmer than it would in the summer. When I slide the heater lever over to cool the engine would run cooler.

I'll give 4Crawler a read and go that route for now. Thanks Rob!

.Edit: Read 4Crawler now I know why it runs warmer with the heater on....
