1. intake gasket looked not quite right. May have leaked a bit.
2. Head g/s on 4 was looking rough, I think it came apart. Small mark on cylinder wall. Enough that you can see it but not feel it. More like a burn mark. I know it was not there on last build.
3. Check block seems flat enough, checked head seemed flat enough. Doesn't seem warped or anything.

I started on it a little after 10 am and finished up about 8 with a hour lunch break. I had Dad helping till 3 and my buddy Bob till 1. Bob was there for the tear down and cleaning we were ready to reassemble by 1:00. Dad helped me get the head on and valves adjusted. From there I was on me own.

Thanks XXX, 92 and Chef for the help on the vacuum lines. Now that I have those in the right places it seems to be doing very well.

.
WOOT! LOL......... wanna come do mine now? hahaha. Jk

Ok update...

the 180 stat I had started to...well stick I suppose. It warm up to about where the 190 used to be then it would drop down right above the fat line for C. It would normally run just off the line.

So I decided to get the normal stat again. When I pulled the old one it had a slight film on it. Not sure what it was. So I tossed in the new one and let it warm up a bit then went for a ride. It went straight to 12 o-clock which is a bit high for this stat and stayed there.

I left it idle for 3-5 min checked the hoses they were cool to the touch. Both the top and bottom were cool. The thermostat housing was warm and the bottom of it was hot.

Went for another ride and the stat opened up (I guess) and the temp went to where it always was about 11 o-clock.

What gives here...didn't matter if the heater was all hot or all cold. Do I have a plug somewhere??? It blew hot air and both lines going to and from the heater coil were hot like they should.

My concern is that it started doing this a while back and that's when it decided to over heat and pop when the H/G.

How's your radiator and fan clutch? You can hear the fan clutch turn on and off when it is started cold right?

The clutch seems fine. It doesn't over heat it just heats up then all of a sudden it cools. As it was idling the fan was not spinning above normal. Both the top and bottom hoses were cool very cool but the needle was straight up and down and the heater hoses were very hot.

Rad is 2 years old and the cap is 3 months old.

Is it possible there is air bubbles in the coolant system?

It could be but unlikely. It's been burped and burped.

It idles fine doesn't surge. I guess I can try burping again on a steeper hill.

hmmmm.

you said there was film on it. what does that mean? like slime? if it's not gonna get cold enough to freeze in the near future, i would say flush it as good as you can, fill up with water, driver around, drain / flush, lather, rinse repeat. i know this from experience that i could never truly empty or flush the system totally, so i had to basically dilute it down until i was just getting water out in the end. then i used toyota gold, errr i mean RED coolant.

i also have the 2-stage thermostat.

I'm using a red coolant from Advanced Auto their brand. As long as you have a clean system coolant is coolant. You cannot mix different coolants though.

It was a film looked like rust at first but it wiped right off. Maybe I'll have to try your thing and then park on a big hill and refill it.

I'll get some vids this weekend. I have been taking a few runs here and there but not in the truck. I take the 4Runner for that stuff. The truck is my DD and I need a truck.
