Has anyone painted their 4Runner top??
I want to paint my trucks top red again. It's currently pink! Has anyone done this before and/or what's the best way? Can I do it myself? The top is currently off the truck so I wanted to paint it before I put it back on this month.

I've done it once. To do it right, you need a good automotive finish with a flex agent. The top is fiberglass...
Standard automotive finish procedures apply - remove old paint (surface layers), dewax, prime, paint, polish.
It can be difficult getting the factory finish back which is rough. I found that 3M rocker panel spray (in the green can) works well - it's about $15/can and takes some practice to apply. You can alternate a layer of paint and a layer of rocker panel spray, this will dull the finish - create a texuture and be about as close as you can get.. or as I could get to a factory looking top.

I completely rebuilt my top this summer...
Removed windows and replaced all of the old rubber and L brackets, while windows were out I replace headliner and cleaned up and panted the inside gray again.
I sanded down the top so no old paint was left used some bondo to fill some gouges by the rear window and one on the top back. Then painted with 6 coats of krylon semi flat black spray paint ( I like to do many very light coats to avoid any runs) . I went to a auto paint shop to ask what kind of paint they would use, they looked at it and told me to try krylon semi flat black spray paint. Said they often use it on black trim on various cars.
I must say it was an exact match, looks great now.
The only difference is that water will bead up and roll off of the spray paint parts of my runner. (We will see how long it holds up to the sun.)
