halfway through the headgasket
I started doing it today. I figured i wasnt going to get very far.. but i am almost ready to get the heads off.. the only problem is i cant get to any of the bolts for the crossover exhaust pipe. I have no idea how to get the heads disconnected from the exhaust and thats all i have left to do before the heads get pulled. I even have the head bolts broken loose.

^x2 about a 24" extension and a 14 mm swivel socket.
Maybe get another guy and try and just take both heads off at the same time with the crossover attached. I think it'd work. Just make sure you unbolt the down pipe.

^ x3. Several extensions, 14 mm swivel socket & an impact wrench makes it a LOT easier. Just be sure you hose all the nuts down with PB Blaster several times before you attempt it.

Unbolt the down pipe from the drivers side manifold. Unbolt the drivers side manifold from the crossover. Remove the drivers side head first with the manifold still attached. Remove the pass. side head with the manifold and crossover still attached. Lots of PB blaster on those nuts. Map gas torch works really well on the real stubborn ones, or if you happen to strip one like I did.

That is exactly how I did it, and I believe, the easiest way.

alright.. thanks. i have a map gas torch and pb blaster.. so ill give it another try.. by the time i got to this point i was already hours into the tear down and just too tired to think. i just wish i had a compressor so i could run my air tools, but ill keep dreaming

It is similar to a torch that a homeowner uses to sweat copper, but it gets alot hotter quicker. It is used by plumbers to sweat copper where moisture or steam might be present to evaporate it. You can buy it at Home Depot. It looks like a regular torch bottle. The only difference is it is yellow and it says map gas on it. Use it for all your plumbing needs. It makes short work of all your sweating jobs.

haha well it was extremely stupid loud with that old flowmaster on so i went with a 19" muffler from advance thats stock on some car.. sounds good but i made a design flaw. stupid me created my own y pipe by welding two pieces together. big mistake.. between 2800 and 3200 rpms it resonates pretty bad. i can still get you a clip if you want.

i tried all of your suggestions and i still cant get anywhere.. i broke 2 of the bolts loose on the crossover to y pipe flange and stripped the third one (used map gas on all of them) and i dont know what to do about the stripped bolt. and i can only get to one of the bolts for the drivers manifold to crossover pipe flange from under the truck. i can get to one from the top, but theres not enough room to get it off. and i cant get to third one at all.. ive been trying different things all week.. and its really startin to get to me that theres only 3 bolts left until the heads can come off

use a tourch heat it up if you striped it to bad get it real hot and tap a smaller socket on once you heat the metal up its like butter will come right off! i pulled my motor to get mine off

just go with headers, then you can cut the old crap off with a sawzall. the headers will solve the hot head issues and fix the future blown gaskets issue. Err I hope. Cause that's what I am doing.
