Nippondenso remans or remakes are always funny that way... I warranty exchanged the "new" starter I bought for my 22re about 4 times in the caurse of a year because it also kept locking up, and I'd have to beat on it with a hammer to get it to free up

Starters dont 'lock up'...They will click when either the supply voltage is insufficient or the contacts in the solenoid (usually just one side) are worn. The hammer trick doesnt knock the starter free, it just moves things around slightly often enough to get a start.

yes, the contacts are 9 out of 10 times the cause of the Nippondenso starter "locking up"
