No the backfireing will burn all traces of fuel. And oil and carbon eventually
As far as adjusting valves goes. I dont think its that. Id say valve timing.

Hook up a vacuum gauge, at idle, and while revving the engine. Video the act, and the gauge's behavior. Upload to YouTube or photobucket, then link here. If you're holding a steady 18 in/hg at idle, I think your valves are ok. Does the vacuum gauge needle fluctuate at idle?

thought i'd post a pic of the cam for those inexperienced (like myself), this will give you an idea of what to look for when you have the valve cover off and are turning the motor over by hand.

culprit was the cyl #3 exhaust valve, as you can imagine the rocker arm was toast too.

Wow congratulations budget builder on nailing the problem, I'm sure it feels so good.im looking for some help. I got a 94 3.0 with a bad backfire (or after fire) when decelerating, it's so loud it sounds like a gunshot...I deleted my cat and just got a new walker sound fx muffler (it's what the truck had when I bought it), but I notice some leaking exhaust in my exhaust pipe (rusted holes) leading up to my muffler. Could this cause the backfire? Thank you for any help.
