changed the tranny oil & filter this morning...saw the magnets they just had gear dust no metal shavings.I cleaned the magnets and pan reinstalled it and I'm going for a test drive.I really feel that the problem I'm having is coming from the t-case I think?

It's all the same in your truck ... the two share fluid and everything.

Sure you can separate them, but they are indeed one assembly, siamesed together.

tc...... the tranny fluid was kinda brownish in color but I could tell that it had a red tint to it when I had some on my finger.I changed the fluid & filter and the rolling grinding is still there..when I gas on her to go over a hill the grinding is worse (I have new U-Joints and the drive shaft is in phase) once I top the hill and level out some the grinding is not so bad but it's there.on level grade if I kick down on the gas to hit passing gear there is a lot of grinding and a sound of some sort some times the sound is like a bad wheel bearing kinda.....not sure where it's coming from maybe i'll take her to another shop in town to have a tranny guy look at it (the first shop I took it to kept it all day just to tell me that they cant pin point where the problem is coming from and charged me for shop time so I'm not going back there)
thanks for all the advice if u have any more let me know
Dwayne

I agree with ya howeverI do have the noise while coasting and I can put the tranny in neutral and still have it I just replaced the rear u-joints 3week ago and I still have the rolling grinding.I purchased this 4runner knowing it had this problem and in my years of experience of repairing cars I thought to my self Hey I know what causing the problem the U-Joints.......but they aren't the cause of this issue maybe it's the driver....lol

I decided yester day enough is enough!...I took my 4runner over to a local tranny shop in town that does business with the County I work for. They had it all day and call me yesterday about 3:30 pm with news as to what they found...(unlike the other shop that had it all day just to burn up my gas from driving the dam thing and calling me that evening saying..we don't know what the porblem is it'll be 68.00 for our time what jerks!)..now these guys drove the 4runner several times throught out the day and put it on the rack for several hours they said. They couldn't pinpoint my grinding because it is not consistant all the time however if they had to calculated guess to them it feels like a wheel bearing, or maybe a carrier bearing in the rear chunk he said that it's rare that the carrier bearing in the rear chunk goes bad on these yotas but he has seen it happen but to him right now the wheel bearing or bearings it feels like.He said that the tranny with 169,000 miles works perfict and the t-case seems not to have any problems either good news for me!....now they said to start with rear wheel bearings first if I would like but keep driving the 4runner until the grinding gets bad enough to know where the bad bearing is coming from.....so I guess I have to drive her grinding or just start to replace wheel bearings hoping the first one I choose to work on will be the bad one?

well I replaced the front rotors and wheel bearings and went for a test drive and I still have the grinding/vibration....but the rotor shake I had is gone good news....now I do have some slack in the rear diff I can move the tires rolling forward and backwards and feel some slop free play quite a bit but no bearing noise or grinding....maybe the carrier bearings or ring/pinion with slack and will this cause the vibration when acclerating up swells in the road and also when taking off fast from a dead start
any advice on this issue........

Are chains stronger than gears? I thought the other way around. Chains stretch...
