Gasoline in Oil
Hi,
I recently replaced my crankshaft pulley, changed the oil (added a little "no smoke" too), cleaned out and changed the radiator fluid, changed the spark plugs and then adjusted the valves. Just yesterday I was changing the valve cover gasket and grommets and smelt a very overpowering smell of gasoline. I drove it a little today to warm it up and it seems to run fine. I checked the oil and it is way over full and smelt like gasoline. The oil is now very thin (with gasoline). I looked at some other threads on the topic but it didn't explain much.
Could it be the valve adjustment?
Also, one of the spark plug wires was bad (the connector came off of the wire and I shoved it back on there) I replaced it yesterday. It didn't seem like it wasn't firing though.
Can anyone help me. Maybe with an easy fix, since I needed to drive 500 miles this week.

Possibly.......
From what I can gather of your post, you had/have a dead cylinder/not firing, and because you added no smoke I will assume you're burning oil. Could be unburned fuel is dumping past the ring/s or bad valve seals and contaminating the oil. That's usually how fuel gets into the oil......that I'm aware of.
Run compression test and check the PCV for blow by.

I not sure how much you drove it, or what engine you have. If it's a carburated 20r or 22r, I would suspect that the fuel pump is leaking through the diaphragm and getting into the oil.

Right.....I forget people have carburetors still. I'm so used to addressing those with EFI on here.
So, the 22r's have a mechanical fuel pump? Where's it located?

I don't have one now, but used to have one on a 90 2wd pickup. If I remember correctly its on the passenger side front of the engine, I believe its driven by a cam just behind the top timing gear. Not positive though. Just know its possible to leak into the engine.

Sorry my bad... I'm to busy freaking out right now, forgot to post the specs. It is the 22re engine. And if necessary, it is a '91 4x4 Pickup.
I changed the oil. I will post if it has gas in it. I am thinking it probably was the spark plug wire (I hope) but now it is sputtering a bit more than it used to.

On an EFI truck the only way fuel gets into the oil is from a non-firing cylinder.
On a carbureted truck, yeah, a faulty fuel pump can leak into the oil, or else the same method as above.
First thing, check to see if you're firing on all four. Then change the oil, and smell it again tomorrow.

I changed the oil and drove it for a while. The oil kinda smells like a permanent marker. I have never really smelt oil but I don't think it smells like gasoline. at least not as bad as before. How can I tell if all four cylinders are firing all the time?
so do you think that it was probably from the spark plug wire?

When a 4-banger loses a cylinder totally, it runs BAD. You'd hardly be able to drive it..... there could be an injector that doesnt close, so it leaks off all the fuel after you stop your engine... it takes a little work to isolate that problem though.... the cold start injector, or one of the cylinder injectors are the only path for raw fuel to enter the crankcase on the EFI engine.

Need help-gasoline in oil
Hello. New here. My Toyota is a 94 4 Runner, v6, auto. I had oxygen sensor on order, waiting for it to come in. I took truck to the store, as soon as I parked it, it started running rough. Came back out and started it, running rough still and smoking some now. Whitish in color. Got the oxygen sensor put on, still running rough idle. Still smoking. I have not been driving it. Checked oil dipstick, overfull now due to gasoline on dipstick, I can smell it. I really have no idea where to start, am on very limited budget, my only transportation, I have gathered that I should change the oil and filter and check oil dipstick again. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Sorry so long. Thanks.

Yes. I don't think theres any good simple answer to my problem. I guess I'm trying to stubbornly not think it's horrible because it came about so out of the blue. I do appreciate your answer. Thank you very much. The only other thing I can put my finger on that was different was lately it did not power itself up and run fast idle then idle down lately. I also hear gurgling sounds near the shifter. I had a Nissan 4x4 for 13 years, I just find it hard to see how this one wants to lay down without too much warning!!

Toyota did do a campaign where the would replace headgaskets. Call your local dealer and give them your vin number and see if they will still fix it. I am not positive if that is still going though.
If not i would start calling around to see what quotes are to fix it, unless you plan on fixing it yourself. If so start a build thread and people here will happily help you out.
