Gas tank relocation
Has anyone relocated their gas tank in the spare tire well? If it could be managed, that would be ~8 inches of truck that would no longer be hanging below the axel..which is a good thing.
Obviously, to maintain the spare, you would need to get a rear bumper hanger for it, but thats no biggie. Anyone think of any other obstacles that would make this an improbable move?

Shocks? I don't know for sure but they might get in the way. I am in the middle of a drivetrian lift to raise my tank 3". It is pretty sweet let me tell you. The tank is even with the frame and with my chevy spring hangers so far forward, well its pretty hidden.

It's been done.
You relocate the shocks to the top of the axle, it's fine. trim the ends of the tank, and it will fit between the rails. Its a pain
Easier to get a fuel cell, and start from scratch.

I've had the same thoughts.
You should notice a weight difference when it's full, because that's 120 lbs further behind the rear wheels. But that would be more even than having it all on one side..
What about using the fuel tank from a xj or zj? I don't know anything about how they're mounted or how the size compares, but it seems like they would be a better fit for the rear.

I've been considering this too - that's a whole lotta ground clearance to be gained without really raising the CoG.
When I was out in CO a couple weeks ago, we stopped by AllPhase and was checking out their Bronco, which has a 16 gal fuel cell - it was TINY. I think there are all kinds of places you could fit it.
I've also considered the Cherokee tank idea. Supposedly, the vehicles are the same width (front bumpers will fit if you make mounts) so it just might work...

My dad is building a '55 Chevy Delivery Drag/Show car, and he put a fuel cell into it. Im not sure, but I think he welded it up himself. Ill talk to him about it, see if he'll take a look under my T4R, see what we can come up with. The stock tank is shielded, but I'd sure hate to punch a hole through it dropping on a rock too hard.

make your own skid plate.
If you weld you're own, make sure you include baffles, and make sure you get it coated on the inside. Any gas tank place can do it.

yes you can do it, withOUT doing anything to the shocks, Im sure it would have to be a custom tank, but then again, anything is doable with enough money, lol.

Here's some pictures of what I did with my tank, its not a 4x4 so I wasn't too worried about ground clearance, but I am going to make a small cage with a skid plate after I get the 3.4 in. I was able to get the stock high pressure hose extended for about $40 at a hose specialist, picked up the rest of the stuff at autozone, and soldered and extended the stock wires. I dont have stock shocks and the only holes in my bed are for the shocks and cage. I didn't cut the bed out for the tank. this should give you a good idea of what it'll look like when your done.
