Mine did it would come on when there was about 80km range left in tank or a little less than 10L. My 94 [3rd gen] is supposed to have one but no one I've spoken with has ever had one that worked... even from new.
My mech. told me that it is a seperate sensor on the sender that triggers it and it [the sensor] can go bad.

I've got an 86 it seems to come on at about 10L/80km/50mi like aviator said.
I'm not certain because I've got an SR5 guage cluster but the light is in the lower R/H corner. shouldn't be too different from your truck. If yours is working.

im pretty sure its sposed to have one.. my 89 has a spot for the light but it never lights up...i figure the bulbs burnt out but im to lazy to fill it up and i dont believe in letting a tank get that low before filling it up anyways (dont like water getting into the injectors at all)

They had it in the DLX cluster also but as I recall the light was in the opposite corner.... on the 3gens [89-95] the light is supposed to be a little red diode thingy in the upper left corner of the fuel gauge according to the owner's manual... does anybody's light actually work? should start a thread about that....

ex: the oil light looks like an oil can and the motor light looks like and engine so i take it the gas one must look like a gas can. or does it say get gas soon?

My old '87 had one in the right hand corner of the gauge cluster if I remember correctly.Thats the only way I knew when to fuel up because the fuel gauge went out at about 110,000.

now i need to see if it works.
is the only way of doing this runnig until you have no gas or the light comes on ?
but i do not have the indash tack so does this mean its not an sr5
