Just bought a 4runner from someone for $500, it has 250k on it. Reverse and neutral both act as forward gears, I'm going to check the linkage tomorrow but am wondering if anyone has had this problem and if it may be a solenoid? I can turn the car off in gear and it will roll backwards. Neutral acts as 1st or second gear, I need to do some more investigating, any tips are much appreciated.

It's a 95 auto trans 2wd

I assume you have an A340E (it's listed on the door pillar). If it's a short or open in a solenoid circuit, you'll get a code. http://web.archive.org/web/201408160...17diagnosi.pdf Do you have a reason to think it's a solenoid?
