Fluids

I have a 1988 Toyota 4runner. I purchased this vehicle in 1998 and only drove it for one month before the engine started slinging oil everywhere. I just parked it and purchased another vehicle. The Toyota has been sitting under a shed for about 15 years. The body is still in great shape so I finally decided to rebuild the engine and start using the Toyota again. The engine has been rebuilt and installed into the vehicle. Now I am wanting to change the fluids. The engine oil is the only fluid that has been replaced. What other types fluid does this vehicle take? I've heard Dextron 3 for the transmission but want to be certain I am adding the correct type fluids in each system. Thanks

In 1993, the transmission fluid was Dexron II, but Dexron III is backward compatible.

Here's the rest of what you want to know: http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...nce/2maint.pdf

Note that the power steering system gets Dexron as well (it says so right on the cap!). Using regular "power steering" fluid is said to be a common cause of leaking.

I'm glad you hung on to it! These things are meant to be constantly re-born and used!

Just keep in mind that manufacturers are no longer allowed to call the fluid Dextron 3 anymore since the license was pulled. Dextron III compatible fluids are usually called Dex/Merc now.

I use Castrol Dex/Merc in my transmission and power steering system. It is easy to find in my area.

I dunno if I missed it, but you didn't state if it was a manual or an automatic transmission. That will change the fluids needed.

Krimsonone,it's an automatic. Thanks for all the responses. They have been very helpful. The 4runner is finally running again now I just have to get it to stop. Due to all the years it has set up the brakes doesn't work but should be an easy fix. Surprisingly everything else still works great except for the back glass,it wont raise. The motor doesn't seem to be getting power so I will check the fuse tomorrow and go from there. Everyone on this site has been very helpful in helping me get this vehicle back on the road. Thanks again for all the advice.
