Few 1st Gen 4runner questions
hello all,
Fixing to do some tune up work on my truck and had a few questions. Its a 86 4runner with a rebuilt 22RE. I rebuilt the motor at 200K ( about 20K ago ). It got bored .40 over, head shaved .20, balanced the crank, and added a comp cam. I just adjusted my valves last week, and now with my tax refund im gonna dump some more money into her. First thing im going to do is new spark plugs, and a new ignition coil ( wires are fine, Taylor 8.2's ). Going to slap a timing light on it and might adjust it a bit. Also going to replace the o2 sensor, here in lies my first question.. When I rebuilt my motor I put a Pace Setter header on, and removed the cat. With the new header the o2 sensor got moved from on top of the manifold to behind the collector, does this cause an issue? Should I drill a hole further up the header and weld in a new bung, or is it fine in this location? Also i'm going to do an EGR delete, and before I ask my question, yes I have searched this forum for hours and have not found an answer to my question and please please don't tell me its illegal or its bad for the environment. So here is the question: when doing an EGR delete, can you remove the charcoal canister? Thanks for any and all info!!

The charcoal canister in no way effects your performance but if you want to remove it have at it.
I hate to see anyone trying to get performance out of this engine so very expensive for very little gain.
Might be a good idea to save your parts if you decided to ever sell this vehicle.
Then it is your money enjoy.

EGR is in no way related to the charcoal canister. You won't gain anything by removing the EGR and your MPG will suffer. I lost 2 MPG as a direct result of the EGR removal. The O2 sensor should be ok, if you're worried about it you may want to look into adding a heated O2 sensor.

Been a while since I was researching this but seems some have issues with it being further down exhaust stream. But some say pacesetter works great. So really depends if your having problems.
The run the erg block off and took it off. Removed the whole erg system and thoroughly cleaned it with carb cleaner. Replaced vacuum lines gave me the best improvement.
Don't see any use for removing carbon canister. But see problems for you if you move or your local laws/inspections change. It's a free country.
