Exhaust leak questions

hijack - same topic, different engine and leak location...what do you guys do about a crack in the exhaust (22re) right AFTER where the doughnut gasket is at (toward the cat)? replace the pipe or attempt welding? i've been trying to find my exhaust leak for a few months and had ruled out the manifold and gasket. replaced the two doughnuts thinking it was there as that's pretty common leak area, but it didn't fix it. was under the truck last week and for some reason looked up at the exhaust from a funky angle and found a crack on the engine-side where the "Y" is at a couple inches past the doughnuts. don't know if its such a good idea to try and weld that as i'm thinking the pipe might be brittle from being so close to the header, and being 16 yrs old.
Both of my rigs had welds right where you are talking about from the previous owners.

If you run some seafoam through it and watch, you should be able to see the smoke coming through any leaks.
Sounds to me like you need a new exhaust manifold gasket. Check to make sure all of the nuts on the manifold are tight.
