Engine Swap done..um..wont start?
OK swapped a 1992 4runner 3vze engine out and replaced with a 1988 p/u 3vz.
When starting it turns over and then releases a vaccum out of the TB and wil not start. any ideas on what to check first?
Thanks

ok got it started (i was missing a small ring gasket on the fuel rail, lost fuel pressure) ok anyway now it runs for like 3 seconds and stalls still the same vaccum sound from the TB. any ideas besides going through every vaccum connection?
Thanks guys

My bad should have clarified....
Turn the key fires right upto 1500rpm just in time to stall... th rpm needle falls as soon as it passes 1500rpm. Throttling it makes it a little worse. I dont think it has to do with fuel as much as vaccum loss somewhere....or something completely different.
Any help is appreciated
Thanks

sounds like deja vu. when i first cranked my rebuilt 22re i had the same problem. mine ended up being a bent contact inside of the afm. no clue how it happened, i was very gentle handling the unit. must have been gremlins. the computer was shutting down the engine because of a bad voltage value. i used the service manual to probe the computer for voltage and found the bad value for the afm. if you don't find anything obvious, try the trouble shooting in the efi section of the online service manual on here if you don't have one yourself.

if your useing the 88 harness with your 92 ecu
im prett damn sure that the harness arent the same
i know my 89 wasnt the same as a 90. as far as starting then dieing sounds like the signal from the afm isnt getting through or connected right

You are correct the harnesses are not the same. However, if you were to keep all the sensors of the original engine thereby keeping all the connections the same, it works.
What is the afm?

negative the connectors arent the same to the body harness and to the ecu
the pin outs are differnt
like i said even my 89 to 90 was differnt and thats same body style

what your saying is that the only thing that is different is the block and heads, everything else is original equipment. same computer, wiring harness, connectors and all sensors and plugs from the original block. makes sense to me. the vacum puff you are getting when the engine dies is the last bit of compression being pushed through the open valves, i think. just a guess on my part. if you want a good troubleshooting procedure, use the fsm like i said before. no matter what system you are dealing with the manual gives procedures to check everything. it saved my arse. i would have never found the bent pen in my air flow meter (box with the plug on top of the air cleaner box) if my manual didn't point to it and say bad or OUT OF ADJUSTMENT afm. i thought that they were sealed units that were just r and r.
