You beat me to the response. I've never had auto hubs, but apparently, they weren't very reliable. A good easy upgrade for you would be to switch to manual hubs for reliability. Then you can look at the options for differential lockers if you will be doing much offroading.

K, Well yeah dude, my bad.
I didnt even know they still had auto hubs in 87.
An elocker is a totally diff thing.
The auto hubs have a bad rep cause if you back up the hubs actually unlock.
Search manual hub swap and get that done, they are more relaible anyway.
And welcome to Yotatech, The place that will make all your wildest dreams come true

Still had auto-hubs available on 4Runners as late as 1989, I think. I'm pretty sure the 2nd gen (1990) was the first year that ADD was available. On trucks, ADD might have been available a year earlier than on the 4Runners, if I'm not mistaken.

it allows you to unlock the front wheels from the CV shafts thus letting your CV shafts not wear so much... also gives you a 2wd Low...
its a system that toyota designed so that you didnt have to get out of your truck in order to put it into 4wd... also called shift on the fly, or 4wd on demand...
lockers are completely different...

think of it kind of like a quad axle, both tires always spin the same speed cause they're fixed together.
make sense?

You have a manual locking hub. Which means you have to physically get out and turn the knob (center of front tire) to essential 'connect' or 'lock' your front axles so that they turn with your front drive shaft. Most newer vehicles 'lock' or 'connect' on their own. So that people in nice suits don't need to get out and touch dirty parts.
Now an 'e-locker' will cause both of your tires to spin in the front at the same time. If you don't have an e-locker one wheel will spin at a time. A lot of people with 4 wheel drive think all 4 tires spin but that is not the case.. you get one in the back and one in the front.. unless you 'lock' them together using an e-locker or other lockers like arb or detroit etc.
It is much more complicated than that.. but that is the basic version. Hope it helps

We know you don't have ADD. That leaves two options.
Auto Hubs look like this:
and Manual Hubs look like this (except the selector knob is probably red and not painted blue on yours):
69sidestep: which ones do you have?

One other thing 69sidestep... I will point you to this thread here in the newbie tech section. There is lots of info stored there that can help you understand your truck better and the options that are available out there for you.

In the first post he says he has "an e-locker hub" I assumed he looked at it.. it said lock / unlock and he thought it was an e-locker.
But I think you are right.. later on he says "auto locking hubs" .. my mistake.
