ECU Power Supply
Well I've been working on my 85 that now has an 87 22RE in it. When I start it up it runs fine until I put it under load and then it sputters and well it's just not pretty. I found this http://autorepair.about.com/library/...bl-dtcs-36.htm so I went ahead and ran the test and came up with 11 blinks of the check engine light indicating something is wrong with my ECU Power Supply. Well now I know what seems to be causing my problems but I don't know what I need to do to fix it. Someone help me out and shine a little light on this for me. Thanks!

Sent ya the TPS check proceedures. Let me know how it turns out, or if ya need one...
FYI: Truck has an 87 motor, 87 harness, and 87 ECU. Also has the 87 Airbox lid with the 87 MAF, and the 87 exhaust manifold with the 87 O2 sensor... Pretty much the entire drivetrain, motor, tranny, t-case and electronic controls are all 87. The two were mated together at the 85 MAF sensor plug that was originally in the 85, and then where the 85 body harness plugs into the 87 ECU... IIRC those were the only two connection points. Well that and the Alternator lead.

Some people have found if it is a TPS problem that by unplugging it the condition improves as there is no longer a sensor malfunctioning in the circuit sending erroneous info to the ECU. Then, by default, the ECU adjusts and compensates. So, you might try that as a quick way to pinpoint it. Then, of course, test it to verify what's actually wrong with it. But, it sounds to me like the VTA (throttle angle) circuit is bad in the sensor.
By running a "sweep test" not covered in the standard testing procedures, you can find out.....that is if you find everything looks good with the standard test. Basically, hook the positive probe to the VTA terminal and the negative to the E2 terminal. Then, slowly and gradually move the throttle plate open while watching the meter. It should move upward in resistance without faltering.

Anthony... I didnt get a chance to email you those testing proceedures, but check out the FAQ/Links post in Ozarks... Somewhere in it is the link for a Factory Service Manual for an 85... Open it and check out the EFI Diagnostic portion and you'll find the testing proceedures. I'd email it to ya now, but the work firewall doesnt seem to like me.

The first Code I pulled was a two digit code 2 blinks then pause folled by 9 consecutive blinks. I put a new TPS on it and that didn't help any so I'm going to say that's not my problem. I'm not sure what to do from here. I might just take it to the shop and leave it to someone who know's what they are doing (hate to do it but oh well).

Did you test the old or new TPS and did you adjust the new TPS properly after installing it?

Two blinks, then a pause then 9 blinks may be 2 seperate codes, a code 2 and a code 9. that or a code 29.... I'm working on pulling up an FSM to check out what those codes are.

Anthony, how long was the pause between the 2 and 9 blinks?
Roger, my work firewall is blocking your site Is there a code 2, 9, or 29 for an 87? All I can get access to is an 85 and a 88 FSM.

Matthew...I live right off hwy16 in fayetteville if you know where that's is. If you take 265 West until it ends and then take a left on hwy16(huntsville rd) I'm about a mile down on the left. If you could give me a hand that would be cool and if not I'm just going to take it in and hope it's something simple and fairly cheap. Thanks!
