why fix something that's not broken? how long has Toyota been using a fan clutch? I have a 3vz w/ an aftermarket temperature sensor. hardly ever gets over 182-183 degrees even in California summers.

I follow you, but I think the situation is more complex and intuitively I still believe the fan should only help. I also reach this conclusion because running my efan at high-speed lowered coolant temps when compared to low-speed operation. And the low-speed fan had to run often under normal operation. You get a feel after a while watching the temps respond to hills and speed, and watching when the fan is running or not (I had an indicator light).

Keep in mind the radiator fins have some drag so it's not like air velocity through the fins equals vehicle speed with the fan not running.

Also, the mechanical fan is about the same diameter as the efan. But the pitch is much more aggressive (like a propeller).

Red face

I think this whole deal was brought about by trying to save engine power .

This was back in the late sixties early seventies

Then the whole sideways engines kinda forced it to be done.

On these vehicles kind of funny but things become a fad like wings on cars.

Who can say I have swapped a few back to stock.

I also have done my share of keeping up with the neighbors in my misspent Youth.

You know what, today I was working on my 4runner installing the tranny oil cooler. I had a good look at the front end, and I think you are right in that I am underestimating how much the air flow is affected. Its probably a lot more than my assumed 15%. The more its affected the more a fan is effective. Hmmm

Someone needs to install a pitot tube in the radiator fins and check air velocity

I would love to put my car in a wind tunnel for two main reasons. To see the airflow through the engine bay, and also the airflow over my newly installed oil cooler. I had to install it under the front end, behind the skid plate. I'll post pics in my build thread soon.

Edit: I used the garden hose and my finger to force some water into the oil cooler and see how the water flows, but it's much heavier than air so it was pretty inconclusive.
