drive shaft problems
#21
Yeah the truck has about a 2 inch lift on it. The one piece driveshaft I had built has a cardon cv joint on the transfer case end and a single u joint on the pinion end. It vibrated bad at 45 mph and after 60 it stops. Not sure if the rear end is really shot or not. To me it feels like it has very little play in the pinion.

I did a little more research and figured out and learned about angles. I measured everything up and my drive shaft is 9 degrees down and my pinion is 5.5 degrees down. Hoping this is my problem. Going to shim up the pinion and I'll see if that fixes it.

thanks for the spelling lesson if you looked harder at what i said is when you have a slip yolk style driveshaft you put the cv at the rear dif the guy is having problems with vibration issues and yes i am a bad ass tech who deals with these oproblems every day i cant remember every fricken driveline in every fricken vehicle so dude if you want to smash me do it with a pm so we dont waist others time

No need for bashing on anyone. Everyone has there ideas and opinions on what might help me out and all I'm trying to do is get more ideas. I appreciate everyone's help and input. Drive shatter when you told me that I assumed you meant on a slip yoke. Thanks for your help though. I'll let you guys know what I come up with tonight after I install my shims!!

Well I installed the shims. Now my drive line is 9 degrees down and my pinion is 8.7 degrees down and it still vibrates like a SOB!!! Not sure what to do from here. About ready to throw in the towel. Could it be my rear end? It vibrates on jack stands to so i know its not the front end. could bad rear wheels bearings be the cause? any other ideas would be helpful thanks

It still does it with out tires on the truck. Pinion bearing has a tiny bit of up and down movement maybe a 1/8 inch if that and if i spin the drive shaft it has about a 1/4 inch before it catches and turns the tires

ok i was kind of thinking that just didnt want to spend the coin to rebuild the rear end until i found my problem. Guess ill go ahead and rebuild the rear end. how hard is it to set backlash? how do i go about it? what special tools will I need?

right but to install a new pinion bearing everything needs to come out and id have to set my back lash correct? Cool thanks ill shoot him a pm and see what he thinks and if he can rebuild it for me for a decent price.

Hey Polaris--
I just saw your pm to me.....I don't check them as much as I do my regular gmail...... pictures of your rear 2" lift and your driveline can be very helpful......but it seems to me that a small 2 inch lift would not screw up your angles all that much. You should not see any up/down play in the pinion flange so it sounds like that is probably the root cause. I can post pics of what I find on this same thread....but be warned that when I post pics I really post TONS of pics just get me that master kit we talked about and I'll set it to exact standards. Measured standards. Ever think about a Spartan since it will be tore down anyways? Smoking deal on a V6 Spartan I found........

From what ive been told if vibration is still there with no load or clutch in the its probly not driveline. I have a vibration on my truck around 45+, worse under load but still there with clutch in, and im leaning tords axle bearings or Diff bearings. Another way to tell when driving is do you feel vibration in your TC shifter? Driveshaft vib should be noticable at the shifter.

I don't see any need for the spartan for my needs think I'll just stick with the original. I have put to much money into this truck as is.
Bullzer I think your exactly right. From what I have learned from this whole experience. I'm thinking maybe my axle bearings are bad too I might replace them while my 3rd is being rebuilt by ZUK here. Might be a stupid question but how do I get into the rear axle bearings? When I jack up the rear end I can grab my tire and I have a little play back and forth when pushing and pulling on the tire. Thinking this could be axle bearings.

I'm thinking I'm going to reach them while I have everything tore apart. I'm guessing the side that has the 4 holes bolts to the drum were it would normally bolt onto the truck?
