Diff breather question

I just swapped rear thirds from a 4-cyl to a newer V6 third. In my axle housing there is a diff breather on the top with a little captured floating lid. First question: How do I get this little SOB off and put a tube on it? Just yank it off with pliers?

Second question: this new third has another hole, i assume for a breather assembly, that is up on the top, about half in diameter, just over the ring gear. An inch below is it a threaded hole. These two things are surrounded by an egg-shaped flat-milled face. Since I figured this breather hole was extraneous, I found a steel plate, drilled a hole in it, and put a little RTV around the breather hole and screwed it on. Keep in mind the plate is about twice as long as it needs to be, and the hole is on the upper side.

What can you tell me about this thing? Is there a factory V6 diff breather or something? My 4-cyl diff doesn't even have a hole on the top there.

the hole you're talking about is the ABS sensor hole. i blocked mine off with freeze plugs, 3/4" i think. ran me about a buck at the local parts slinger.

i've heard you can use a regular 1/8" NPT hose barb in place of the factory breather, unscrew the one that's in there and the 1/8" threads should be a close match to the metric threads that are on there. just use a brass fitting and they'll deform to the threads on the axle.

Kyle,

I may need to do that mod you're talking about. I think my little adapter blew its seal because there's a bit of moisture around the edge of the hole and its seeped down over the diff cover a little.

I'll let ya'll know how it works out when I get this stupid little thing fixed.

there's a good write up link, it seems there is a factory nissan part that plugs right in with a hose barb.

I followed this one too.

If you plan to do the front, shorten the union some so you can make a sharp bend right off the diff to clear the oilpan.

I used the part #s off of WATRDs website and got my unions from the dealer for a couple bucks each and then ran line up into the engine bay with some after market air filters. Works like a charm.
