If you try heat do not heat the bolt, it will only make it softer and probably end up twisting it off,,,, you want to heat the outside of the crank to expand the threads so the bolt will turn,,,, I have heated lots of stuff to break them loose but never a crank bolt,, dont get the crank very hot, just put a little heat to it and then hit it with the impact,,,I have never seen a crankbolt yet that a good impact wont get off,,, I would throw it in the back of a truck and take it to a shop,, they would pop it out in a second,,,,,good luck

Are you having trouble holding the crank still?

or are you holding it still and not able to turn the bolt?

here's my thread about it....boils down to I was able to hold it steady with webbing tied to the frame and break it loose with a 6pt 1/2''drive impact socket on an 18'' breaker bar with a 4 foot pipe.

https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...emoval-193505/

don't try to just loosen it, you have to sneak up on it and shock the hell out of it.....same as with an impact wrench that I don't have.

wait until you see how small the actual bolt is......for the amount of trouble it is, it should be about a foot long!!!

Hi,
I am a newbie here but hope this info works for you. I am a Toyota technician and once in a while we get a crank bolt that will not come off. I have top of the line 1/2 impact guns, breaker bars, torch etc. I will give you a couple of options using different tools go with what you have. Option #1 is using a 3/4" or 1" drive impact gun this will work the best but these impact guns are expensive and require a massive air supply. Option#2 heat up the balancer/pulley and use an air chisel on the washer between the bolt and pulley. The washer tends to sieze between these two components because of the composition of the two metals. Once the washer has some movement the bolt will come off. I hope this info helps. Again if you are using a 1/2" impact gun or breaker bar it will not work and you will end up damaging your crank pulley/balancer. Good Luck

Welcome to Yotatech YellowTT & thanks for the tips

92 Toy - I already read your thread (and most of the rest that are out there)

I've got the crank locked up good (flywheel holder pinned to engine stand)

I'm going to make a couple calls today and see if i can find a bigger impact for a decent price, otherwise I'll let the shop deal with it.

Home depot only has 1/2" electric impacts for rent... at this point i'm thinking about letting the machine shop deal with it. I'm going to try hitting that washer with the air hammer and see if that helps. I'm also going to try tightening it (hitting it to the right) and then loosening it, to see if that'll do anything

dont mess around with stupid electrical impacts..

i told ya.. how to get it off.. heat with on of those plumbing torches you can get at any hardware store.. just buy the yellow bottle heat it up.. spray on wd40 or pb-blaster or what ever you have on hand.. then smack the head of the bolt with a BFH (big f'ing hammer) it will jar the bolt loose then get the 3/4 impact from a qualty tool rental.. or take over to one of those mexican tire repair shops if you can get a impact.. and do it there..

i sure you could find a day labor that could get it off with a prybar and a screwdriver...

i ran into this same issue trying to replace the front seal. 2 snapped kobalt breaker bars a run down battery and a socket later i gave up. I tried PB blaster, wd40, 4' cheater pipe, longer breaker bar, starter trick swapped battery for a red top after the other one wore out that bolt just laughed at me and i gave up for fear of snapping the head off the bolt. Someday I will tackle it again with some heat and or a massive impact gun.

hey, try getting one of those $6.99 hand impact from harbor frieght tools

you said its on the engine stand right!

put that bad boy on there with a 6 point socket. and a good impact 19mm and and slam the bolt with a 3-5 lb hand sledge hammer.. i have no reason.. not beliving it wont work..

if you break the tool just take it back they have a great return policy.. better then sears...

I gave up on it. I hit it with heat, spray, heat spray. Nothing. I've never used oxy acetalne before, so was kinda intimidated by it and didn't know how to set the mixture.
I'll take it into the machine shop on Monday.
75k5toy - I'm up north right now, but if I need it I'll be in the area on the 1st & 2nd, can I let you know?

If you have a good floor jack take the handle off and use that as breaker bar by slipping a ratchet into it and pull on that like hell.

I finally got mine. I remembered not to be a little girl...

Actually, I swapped my battery from my other car and it worked on the first try.

... now, back to dis-assembly.
