Cracked 22RTEC Block?!?!?
Less than 3K on my $1,914 "Remanufactured" Long Block from "JER". When I called the # on my invoice I got "ATK", after several calls to them they denied any link to JER and refused to warranty the product.
Opinions on these photos?
Don't buy ATK!!! They and/or their "partners" are scandalous liars and thieves!

I initially thought I had caused the HG leak by removing the head bolts while installing a new cam, so I had the head checked for warpage and pressure tested, results were good, I replaced the HG with a Cometic MLS gasket and installed ARP Studs, nuts torqued to 90lbs as per Rep. w/ ARP. Fired her up and within ten minutes the temp was about 198 at idle in the garage with a steady flow of bubbles, just like before, after "burping" my baby, which had, and still does not, ever end.
The colored fluid test at the radiator fill neck confirmed I still had an issue with exhaust gas entering the coolant system, somewhere... Hmmmmn...

I think, in court, you've got them by the testicular region if for no other reason ... their warranty's are the same, nearly verbatim, save for the name of the company.
Well that and when you call the number on your invoice from company "A" and you get company "B" on the phone....
Sick 'em!

They look good to me... ? on the head, and block.
No doubt, I have 2+ years and about 8K in this project, and all I ever wanted was to put together a sweet Yota. I know I need to get on the ball and find the guy, or gal, who's gonna help me take this battle to court and get everyone on my team on it together. I know I cannot afford an attorney!

you don't need a lawyer to go to small claims court, just present your evidence in a clear and concise manner and you'll be fine. Plus if they don't show up you win your case.

The actual supplier, in this case JER would be the company to contact.
So even if ATK did build and supply the engine, you are not their customer, JER is. It's a bummer, plus difficult to deal with over a long distance.
Blocks for the turbo are rare, expensive, but one solution is just to drill the extra hole for the turbo application in a 22RE engine block and change over the parts. That is the only difference in the two engine blocks.
You might consider replacing the rings and bearings, you will need the gaskets anyway so a kit will do it and they are reasonably cheap.
The other option would be to sleeve the block you have, any good machine shop can do this and it's maybe $100-150 or so that way. Probably even less cost than replacing the block and boring it, etc.
Check to be sure the leak is in the cylinder wall itself. I got the pics open finally, not easy on dialup but I was curious. The head shows no sign of a crack, there is normally "washing" present so I suspect she has a pressure break in that obvious bore. We see that sometimes when a driver is wading a stream that gets a taq too deep..Hydraulic lock can pop a bore open it there is a weak spot.
I say a sleeve will probably fix that good as new....*EB

Jer
The "JER" I had originally dealt with was "japanese engines remanufactured" out of I believe, Falmouth, KY.
- And yes I have called that number, try it, you'll get ATK. That's the number ATK says they purchased when JER "went out of business", so that they "could sell anyone who came across the JER website" an engine. - Sounds "fishy" to me. But that is what "the operator" told me. So i don't think JER in portland is the same company. Who knows, I've stumbled upon more interesting facts along the way lately. Like that the former president/ceo of JER(Roger Deckard) had "rejoined the ATK team". But when I called last week and asked to speak with Roger, the operator hesitated, then said, "I don't believe he works here any longer."
- Anyhow, I'm back to thinking the problem is actually the head itself. Not that it's cracked or warped, but that when they cut the water ports, they put them way to close to the combustion chamber. There is a very thin portion of the head which seems to be about half as wide as other 22rte heads I've seen. See pic...
