cost-benefit advise needed for headgasket repair
Hello -
I have a 1995 Toyota 4-Runner, 3.0 liter V-6, manual transmission, 275K miles. Its head gasket finally failed and engine temp gauge red-lined.
Should I replace head gasket if truck overheated but oil seems to have badly heated and congealed? There is no coolant present in oil.
What other problems may I have caused w/ that kind of overheating?
If I do decide to replace head gasket (w/OEM), is $1,600 - $2,000 reasonable? What other work could be done while mechanic is in there?

I'm currently replacing the head gaskets on my brothers 95 4runner, same engine and transmission. He blew the head gasket as well, but it blew out and pumped oil into the coolant. Check the coolant.
As for problems, I'd think it would depend on how long you drove it with the temp gauge redlined.
IMO, given the amount of work involved with this stupid motor, that price is reasonable. It is a royal pain to work on. You should have the timing belt replaced, the water pump replaced, and spark plugs/wires/cap/rotor done as well. Absolutely get the water pump and timing belt done, as its just a few bolts to do the water pump once you are in that far, and the timing belt has to come off either way.
Its up to you, but you might also look into a 3.4L swap. The 3.0L is the bastard parent of the 3.4, and the swaps are easier to do on a 3.0L truck than a 3.4L. You could check with your mechanic to see what he would charge to do that instead. More power, same or better mileage, and, IMO, a superior engine design.
