coolant temp problem
so i am having a problem my truck. truck temp is fine at an idle, fine if i beat the hell outta it but crusin' 'bout 55-60 in 5th it get dangerously to the red line on the coolant temp. now i just replaced the thermostat 'bout febuary and the gauge sensor at the same time. what i am thinking is that the thermostat is kinda locked up. hoping to god the water pump cuz i have a 87 supra to put a head on.
anythoughts would be great its kinda my daily till i get the supra goin......then its goin a hell of alot higher

if it's a new thermostat, that's probably not it. as for the water pump, they're not that hard to change. you could easily do it in an afternoon. course, i only speak for 22re's, i don't know about the 3.0 and i'm not sure which engine you have.
also, stupid thought, how is your coolant level? my coolant miraculously dissappeared for about a year before i actually saw it leaking. it was a pain in the butt cuz every now and then i had to add coolant when the temp guage skyrocketed but i couldn't figure out where the coolant was going. eventually i started seeing a big enough leak to see a puddle and the mystery was solved.

double check you timing, i had a different vehicle that did that and for some stupid reason the timing was affecting the water temp because it was retarded too much. didnt show up at idle because no extra fuel going in and running the hell out of it reving it up was fine too, added advance and added coolant flow. Also I am not sure but there is that dual stage thermostat toyota put out in a tech bulletin. But i tihing that was to fix idle temp. I could be wrong.
