Coolant in the chamber after rebuild
Alright,
I just finished up a rebuild and started the motor. I'm working with a 22re out of an 86 4x4. There was A TON of steam and coolant coming out of the tailpipe and you could hear coolant bubbling in the exhaust manifold after letting it run for a a bit. There's also coolant in the oil. I performed a compression test and got pretty consistent numbers and they all held compression.

I removed the intake and it looks to be fine. No obvious holes or leaks in between air and coolant ports. I'm just a little stumped. This isn't my first rebuild or HG and I've done this one by the book. Is it for sure the head gasket or could my intake be the culprit possibly. The head block etc, was all checked and cleared by a machine shop.
Thanks in advance...

Alright guys. Thanks for the reply's. I redid the HG and put it all back together. Cleaned all the holes in the block for the h bolts, torqued in four steps like the manual suggested to 65lbs and took my sweet time, again lol. I'm starting it tonight. Ill let you know how it goes.

Ok guys sorry for the long delay. I put everything back together and sure as ever there's still coolant dumping into the combustion chamber and the oil. This is definitely not my first go around with these motors or a job like this I'm just at a loss.
This is the third time I've replaced the headgasket only to have it do the same thing. I'm looking everywhere and cant see where the problem is.

headgasket
warped head
cracked block
intake manifold gasket to head.
Is there anywhere else coolant can be getting into chamber and the oil?
I ship out for the Army Mar. 16th and I need this thing to run soon so my buddy's not saddled with a yard ornament lol

The one I ran into wasn't a Toyota. The tech changed the head gasket on a rebuilt engine 3 times and gave up, so I dug into it. When I pulled the head off I found a very fine crack in the block from the front most bolt hole to the nearest coolant passage. I think it was a Datsun but can't remember for sure.

A couple other things to check. If the head and/or block was surfaced it could be the head bolts are bottoming out. The other is the intake manifold, does it have a coolant passage that might be corroded through to one of the runners?

Before you pull the head off, borrow a coolant pressure testing pump, pull the plugs out, pump the pressure tester, and see which cylinder it comes out of first. It'll help narrow it down if you have to pull the head off again. It's strange to have coolant in all 4 cylinders unless the head gasket isn't being crushed properly.

I assume when you had it apart that you checked yo make sure you didn't have a warped block or head. Sounds more that likely that you have a crack somewhere. The coolant pressure test is a good idea with the plugs out. We're all hoping for you on this one. Where are you located?
Thank you for your service as well.

I would suspect the intake has a crack somewhere letting water in. I recently scrapped an intake that was corroded up and leaking. I cant see it filling all 4 cylinders, but I would pull the thermostat and check the bottom of the intake for possible leaks.
Also an 86 intake has a metal pipe that is pressed in just by the thermostat. Seems like the 87 and others are threaded in. The pressed in fitting is a weaker and thinner design and I have seen it corroded up and could leak there. I think I still have that intake and will post a picture of it at a later time to show what I am trying to say on the pipe fitting.

Hey guys thanks for the reply's. Sorry I'm a bit late getting back. before I did the head I had the motor out and rebuilt it. I brought the block, crank and head to a machine shop in town and had them inspect it. They replaced one valve in the head and said the block and crank looked really good. The head was not surfaced this time and it was holding fine before.
As far as the intake is concerned this is the second one I replaced thinking that might be the case before. I bought another lower plenum off of a Yotatech user and still here we are. I've inspected it thoroughly and don't see an issue.
Ill try the pressure test pump. Is that a pump you hook up to the radiator. Like the ones for rent at Advance Auto and the like?

is there water in the oil at all? (possible timing chain wore through front cover)
when you pull the head off do the head gaskets look like water has been passing through anywhere? Do the head gaskets look like they are crushed? (Head bolts bottoming out)
Did you use new head bolts?
Sounds to me like the block is cracked somewhere. those are just some suggestions.
