Clunking in reverse, whirling in 5th
1986 Pickup 1/2 ton. 240k miles. It has been progressively clunking more loudly in reverse (clunk, clunk, clunk) and I've recently noticed it whirls in 5th gear on the hwy. 1-4 seem to work just fine! Started out about 10k miles ago (truck gets about 5k miles per year) with just a slight clunking in reverse but is getting louder. Last winter had U-joints replaced thinking that would cure it, but no. Upon putting on jack stands and putting in reverse, sound is definitely coming from the transmission and is most noticeable when under load. I'm thinking 5th and Reverse are on the same shaft in the transmission and therefore they are both on their way out? I can deal with no 5th but reverse is needed. Ideas on problem? Guess I will start looking for a used transmission... btw, I use this truck to pull about 1500-2000lbs. Don't reverse much but am thinking age is more likely the cause of this?
