Clunking in reverse

1986 4runner 22re 5 spd manual trans, drives and runs great in forward at interstate speeds, just as soon as I put her in reverse it has a not so good clunking sound? Constant as I am going backwards. In 2wd if I push in the clutch it stops and clutch out in reverse clunking? In 4wd hi or low with the clutch engaged or disengaged clunks either way? Any ideas?

Oh, and by the way just bought her a week ago. Haven't checked the u joints or the drive shaft yet, that's what I'm hoping it is. Hope it isn't the tranny!

Well, had the wife drive it backwards and sounds like from the trans. Put the 4wd shifter in N and then the gear shifter in Reverse and still clunking, crawled under and felt the clunking come form the trans! Damn it! Thanks for all the info guys! Gonna drive her this way until I can buy a rebuilt trans from Marlin Crawler! Then change the output seals on the transfer case since I'll have it out as well! After the SAS will be putting in a dual case from MC.
