changing transfer case oil..
I got to change my transfer case oil and I am considering going synthetic. Would there be any problems with 190,000 on the clock ? what type/rating and how much oil do i need ? Year and model in my signature

From the crawler link above crawler says the transfer case uses GL5 rating 75w90 but that You can also run (GL4) in the transfer case. are you guys running GL4 or GL5 ?

You can run either, I've run both. Currently I am running GL-5. Why one or the other? Some folks like GL-4, same as the tranny, in case the tranny output seal ever leaks, you have the the same oil in case they mix. Why GL-5? Because it is easier to find and the same stuff I run in the axles (they need GL-5).

In the wrteup, you say you're running heavy shockproof in the axles - are you running that in the tcases now?
I have been throwing that idea around to quiet my cases, but heavy shockproof is a bit thick for the winter here.

Yes, I have in the past. Currently have 75W90 Redline GL-5 in there now. Why? Because that is what I had on hand when I put my rebuilt t-cases back in after the coupler broke a few year back. The shockproof is not any thicker than the 75W90 when cold. It is rated at 75W250. Basically has additives to keep it from thinning out when hot, yet stay thin with cold.

and you're using the "regular" 75W90 in the diffs?
I went to Royal Purple 75W90 this time, just because the Heavy Shockproof is kinda thick for this time of year and the local Checker had it in stock ...

Front is still heavy weight, rear is some cheap conventional oil that I put in when I had to drain the good stuff to change out a broken diff stud. Planning to swap axle housings in a few months, so will put the heavy shockproof back in the rear at the time.

my tranny needs a flush bad. the fluid is nasty in there. i have heard that it takes about 14 quarts to fill it up.
the fluid is dark my guess because it was 125 in the summer, and it cooked. tranny shifts perfectly (auto) and i wanna know what gear oil to use. im gonna have the pan dropped, filters cleaned or changed.
im sort of lost here. no clue on what GL means? where can i get some fluid to use, and what viscosity should i use?

Automatic transmissions use automatic transmission fluid (ATF) NOT GEAR OIL, which is what is being discussed in this thread. So all this talk about GL-4 and 5 have nothing to do with ATF.
Crap....just realized this thread is a year old. And I cant delete it. OOPS!
